The Birdcage
View from the High St, at the moment the outside is full of tables and the fosters flows on the weekends, great day sessions!! Well i would love to say that i have been too busy off on new adventures- white water rafting, rock climbing, horseriding, volcano climbing, so on and so forth, but not really for you see im in England, adventure capital of the world!!!! In all seriousness though, this place isnt all that bad really, besides its good for a pound or two and then the quick getaway... which is the plan kids!!! Im working in probably the most out of control job in my career which involves not much else than talking to people and getting bought drinks everynight...yes thats right i have given in the stereotype and have become an aussie working in a English pub.
After getting off the plane and no one knowing where Thame was ( i know up the top of this blog it says im in Oxford, but really thats the closest place to here on the website... these people dont know what they are missing out on...) i had a fair idea that i wasnt gonna be working in london....which at the time i was quite pissed off about, but now i couldnt be happier... Thame is a one street town about
Barring Up
They put me in charge of ALL this alcohol....suckers 30 mins from Oxford, a town where everyone knows everyones business, and yes it is quite possible to be the drunkest man in the town on any given night... a honour that im sure i have held more than once... This main street runs for about 200 metres and contains 18 pubs....And yes there is really not much to do here besides the gym, and drinking... so i have taken part in both quite often.. Working here you quickly meet the locals, and develop town stalkers, you know those people who come in and sit at the same table when your working everyday and love a chat, so i have my little possie of regulars, which is good cause the keep me well oiled for the busy nights at work. Saying that the busy nights are Fridays and Saturdays when the small place fits about 200 people in here... Crazy... probably about 75% of the town....
Anyway enough of that, besides work there has been a lot of going out and meeting new people, most of which are aussies, who are gold to say the least. Most nights involve a session at the local cocktail bar for happy two
Local Talent
This is why we charge 3.10 for a pint... hours, and then off to oxford to go out to the college bars and then on the return visit the kebab wagon located about 10 metres walk ( 30 metres after a few cans ) away. This is a great idea and dougal and I are seriously thinking about taking the idea back to Manly and giving it a Mr Whippy spin and driving around the streets at night with the punjabi mc's playing instead of the Mr Whippy music...( greenfields??)
The days off that I get involve going into london and catching up with all those people who put up with me complaining my ass off last year and catching up on the year that passed... There have been many good nights including a night involving me and sidekick dougal, and Mike stealing the velvet rope from a club and roping off our own little area of the nightclub and calling it the VIP section and trying to get people to pay 5 pound entry or buy us a drink.. was a sucessful night excluding the cover charges and the drink buying...but no deterred from that we took the rope to a nightclub and started a limbo competition
Most important part of the Bar
I've converted many people to australias finest...(not fosters you pommie tools) on the dance floor... a huge sucess!!!
Had my first beer shower the other night...was attempting to change the Fosters keg over...still cant believe they drink that stuff here... its our payback for the whole convict thing i think...anyway the valve was loose and when i changed it over the line came away from the connector and beer started spraying everywhere...even in my mouth...EWWW fosters.......so yeah now i know what my room smells like after a big night out on the cans....this time i was sober to realise it....
Not much else to report party starters... Leaving this place soon...It has been fun....the most fun however has been catching up with everyone so thanks heaps for making the effort to come see me... it speaks volumes....and cant wait till we are all back in Aus to continue the good times...and you poms....cant wait till you see the light and get to Aus....then you will know what its all about...
Im off to Leeds this weekend to make the final tour of mates and catch up with Robbie from FWF 04 for his bday and many other mates hopefully...Robbie is the tool that broke his leg playing roler hockey...hahah anyway thats gonna be a great weekend out...!!! And then on the 30th its off to Ministry of Sound to see Deep Dish, a contunuation of the night they played in Brazil hopefully...
Anyway, enjoy the pics, this really is a lovely town.....Thanks for the memoirs...England. See you all in Egypt and then Dublin...then off to camp!!! Speak soon....Nick

Pub work
Do you have to have experience to work in a pub or just an Aussie accent? ;) btw - you can add towns to the database if they don't already exist :)
