We didn't get as much accomplished yesterday as we wanted. Everything closes so damn early! I guess that's how they keep the tourists here longer. I have noticed, however, that the people here are MUCH friendlier and more polite than in Luton, St. Albans, and London. I've always heard that it's friendlier in the north, and I see it. In medieval times, property owners were taxed by how many square feet the FIRST FLOOR occupied. So people made the first floor small, but extended the upper floors beyond.

The shops used to be butcher shops. Butchers would hang their meat in the windows to sell, and the blood would drip down to the street and slide down the road. The entire street would be red, stinky, and haven for bugs and vermin.

Notice how all the buildings look like they're sagging, because the upper floors are extended past the first floors. Looks like something from a movie, like it can't be real.
