After our sojourn in Ireland, Caribbean Princess returned to the UK where our next port of call was Liverpool. Liverpool was a city I very much wanted to visit. My great-grandparents had sailed from here for America. Several of my ancestors lived or were married here. Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas. Old Churchyard, Chapel Street. "Church. Tower is now the oldest part, built 1811-15 by Thomas Harrison of Chester, ashlar in Decorated Gothic style, 4 angle buttresses terminating in crocketed finials, with flying buttress supporting a graceful open lantern, which is surmounted by a ship weather vane. The rest of the church is 1952 by Edward C Butler, after war damage, in Perpendicular Gothic". "...the church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of mariners. This church was the first founded in Liverpool, of which it was the original parish-church; the present building, however, dates only from the 18th cent., while the tower, with its lantern, was erected in 1815 on the fall of an older one".--Baedeker Grade II listed building. Liverpool Cathedral. St James’ Mount. "In July, 1904, the foundation-stone of Liverpool Cathedral was laid on St. Jameft Mount, 166 ft. above the Mersey. This building, designed by Mr. G. Gilbert Scott, will when complete excel every other English cathedral in length (584 ft.), area (90,000 sq. ft.), and height both of nave (116 ft.) and of towers (260 ft.). Pacific Road ventilation station for the Queensway Tunnel (1925-1934). "Ventilation station for the Mersey Road tunnel. 1925-34. Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, engineers, Herbert Rowse, architect. Steel framed with brick cladding. Composed of a series of geometric blocks grouped around giant main tower. Decoration provided by nogged projecting brick courses on main tower in the form of a cross, the tops of each block stressed with bands of stepped and nogged brick courses. Brick bands give a rusticated effect to base. Doors with chevron decoration in tower base. Houses giant fans used in ventilation, the largest of a series of 3 towers on the Birkenhead side of the tunnel". Grade II listed building. List entry Number: 1291885. DSC_0994p2

Hamilton Square Station. Built in 1886 for the Mersey Railway. Italianate style. Birkenhead. "Station. c1886. By G.E.Grayson. Brick and terracotta. Italianate style. Hamilton Street elevation has hydraulic tower on angle, and pedimented central block of booking hall, with triple round-arched windows in apex and inserted lower openings. Deep cornice band of terracotta panels. Glazed roof to booking hall. Glazed canopy projects from this block and from the tower. 3-bay range to left with louvred windows to right and doorway to left, possibly generator house. 3 paired round-headed windows above, and a row of oculi over. Terracotta cornice and mouldings to openings. Prominent 4-stage tower with round arched windows in lower stage with clustered shafts. Triple round-arched windows above, then single round-arched windows and ribbed paneled band with paired segmentally arched windows, some now blocked. Cornice above, then giant segmentally-arched recesses housing 2 tiers of mullioned and transomed windows with enriched terracotta detail. Machicolated embattled parapet then high round arched recesses with paired windows and oculi. Clustered shafts at angles form pinnacles. Balustraded parapet and small lead fleche. 3 bay 3-storeyed return elevation to Bridge Street with continuous arcading at each level. Interior of booking hall has glazed tiled walls and queen post and collar roof with wrought iron ties. The station was built as part of the Mersey railway and Mersey rail tunnel, which opened in 1886". Grade II listed building. List entry Number: 1218084. DSC_1127p1

Wallasey Town Hall. Brighton Street. Town Hall. 1914-20 by Briggs, Wolstenholme & Thornely. Free Neo-Grecian in a Beaux Arts tradition. Limestone ashlar, rusticated to ground floor; Welsh slate roofs. 3 storeys. Plan: Rectangular 15 x 19 bay block; entrance range (towards Brighton Street) with Civic Hall over; Imperial stair hall at centre with 1st floor Council Chamber overlooking the river. Offices to all floors arranged around small courtyards (for light access only). Exterior: Front (towards Brighton Street): 7 large round-headed windows divided by tall pilasters form a piano nobile (lighting the Civic Hall), with square-headed windows below and a central porch with panelled doors and cast-iron railings to balcony. Pedimented shallow wings with deep central recesses flanked by giant columns in antis. Parapet and 1st floor sill band returns to all sides. Round-headed windows to ground floor, square-headed above, to all other eleva- tions. Side elevations (5:11:3) more simply treated with shallow end wings, those to the Brighton Street end with pediments and giant order of pilasters. Riverside elevation with blank end bays, the 5 central bays projecting with tall round-headed windows and attached columns marking Council Chamber, the windows with elaborate carved keyblocks. Centrally placed tower set back behind river- side elevation: 3 storeys, the upper stages combined and open to form a lantern with large round-headed arches and connecting open screens with columns and entablatures. View towards New Brighton and New Brighton Lighthouse (1830). "New Brighton, a favourite resort of 'trippers', lies on the Cheshire side of the Mersey, 5 M. to the N. W. of Birkenhead. The Pier, 560 ft. long, affords a fine view of the shipping and docks of Liverpool, the Irish Sea, and the mountains of Wales. By the pier is a large Palace & Winter Garden".--Baedeker DSC_0988p1
