Day 5
50 miles. 11.8 mph. 430 ascent.

What great weather we are having. A little cloudy as we cycled out of Grange over Sands and across Mythop Bottoms to Gilpin Bridge but the sun came out and the temperatures soared you the high 20’s as we approached Milnthorpe and the Kent estuary in Arnside. Luckily we managed to get a photo of the train going across the bridge over the estuary to Grange with a reflection in the water. No cafes were found but we did find a bakery for a brew and biscuit before heading off up the hill and around the bay to Silverdale. On the way to. Carnforth we encountered large beds and marshlands, called Quicksands Pool which will be full of wildlife, and missed the town by following the Shore Road. From
here we took the canal towpath down to Morecambe and into the long Promenade where we diced with death (ambling and deaf pedestrians). A quick photoshoot at the statue of Eric Morecambe and a light lunch at the Beach Cafe by the Battery at the south of the prom.
Luckily the tide was with us today with low tide at midday and high at 5.20pm. This meant the ride to Sunderland Point was on and we got to see sad Sambos Grave. He was a young black man who was a ships captain’s helper and not a slave. When the ship docked in 1763 the boy was put in a hotel while he went off to do some business. The boy thought he had been abandoned and pined to death in just a matter of days. After repairing Andrew’s puncture we headed for Lancaster on the cycleway which was the old rail line between Lancaster and Morecambe. The Premier Inn is about 2 miles from the centre of town along the Caton Road with decent rooms and a ‘meal deal’ which was very good, once they got sorted with the confusing paperwork.
