This weekend, I got to go to Canterbury to see all of the North Central folks who are studying there and celebrate my former roommate, Chris', 21st birthday. After taking the overnight bus from Glasgow, I arrived in London early Friday morning. Since it was a bit cold and rainy and I had done a lot of the tourist attractions in London when I visited in September, I decided to check out some of the museums. I started at the Museum of Natural History, which was incredibly huge. I spent more than four and a half hours there, and I felt as though I had just scraped the surface of the collections that they boasted. It was cool that it was clearly a working museum; you could tell that continuing to pursue research was one of their emphases. I was especially struck by their geology collection - there were rows and rows of rock collections that were absolutely stunning. I especially enjoyed the precious gems that were on display. After finishing a reasonable portion of the museum, I headed down the street to the Science Museum, which was also very cool, but offered fewer exhibits that were free so I did
not last as long there. I particularly enjoyed the 3D printing exhibit, as that was something I had been briefly introduced to in my research position over the summer. It was cool seeing how advanced 3D printing technology could be used. I finished off my museum endeavors by going to the Victoria & Albert museum, which had a lot of impressive artwork as well as a very cool exhibit that featured fashion trends since the early 1700s. After finishing at this museum, I walked to the Chipotle on Baker Street where I would be meeting Chris and the crew to grab dinner before seeing Wicked. After dinner, we headed to the theatre and found our seats. The show was very impressive, and I enjoyed seeing it for the sixth time. We then headed to the train station which was right across the street to catch the train to Canterbury. This journey took longer than I thought, so we all went right to bed once we arrived in Canterbury.
After sleeping in the next morning and taking showers in a variety of rooms since the hot water heater was not working in Chris' flat, we headed out into the town
to see the Cathedral and the downtown area. It reminded me a bit of Naperville, but just with a European style. The cathedral was very impressive, but it was unfortunately a bit covered in scaffolding due to some construction work. We grabbed lunch in the downtown area, walked around a bit more and then headed back to the flat. We relaxed until dinner, which was in the flat, and then people came over later and we played games and had a fun night.
Sunday, we took advantage of the light rain and lazy atmosphere to have a relaxing day at the flat. When we finally got ready to head out, we went to Wetherspoon's to get a dinner with the group before I headed back to Glasgow. The dinner was a lot of fun, but it was sad to say goodbye to everyone. After dinner, we got a quick hot drink before they walked me to the bus station where I caught the bus to head first to London before catching the other bus to Glasgow. This bus ride did not go as smoothly, and I had trouble sleeping on the bus, so I was very glad to return to Glasgow and head straight to bed for a nap before class.
It was quite a fun weekend with good friends which was very nice, and has made me excited for us all to be reunited at North Central in the winter.
