Laughs with Ian & James
Right before we went to Manchester, we went to Essex to meet up with Shane's old workmates, Ian & James, for dinner. It was a great night catching up with them! First off apologies for being off the radar for the last couple of weeks. Sorry to all those who were worried about us and to those who were NOT worried about us, ask yourself this 'why don't I love Kim and Shane enough to have been worried about them?'
We had some relaxing times in London and managed to eat up whole days just looking at train tickets and searching for neat places around Mel and Ewan's house. We had a fantastic tour of the hood with Mel, Ewan, Roseanne, Johnny (Ewan's sister and brother-in-law), by a friend of their family.
We have been away on our first jolly away from London Town. We have just returned from what felt like a whirlwind trip to Manchester, Rochdale, Edinburgh, Glasgow, back to London for one night and then away to a wedding in Castle Cary, Somerset.
Manchester was a great break for our anniversary. It is a very walkable city with some great restaurants and shopping. The first notable food stop on our trip was a pizza place aptly named DOUGH. I had scoped this place out before we went, because of its plethora of Kimmy friendly options -
On our 5th Anniversary
Married in Malta, 1st anniversary in Sarajevo, celebrated 2-4 in Vancouver and 5th in Manchester. Pretty decent globe coverage so far! gluten free crust and and cow dairy free cheeses. Having skipped breakfast for some extra sleep, I went for the Breakfast Pizza. Toppings were eggs, bacon and sausage. For all those who have ever had last night's pizza for breakfast, this one is some next level schtuff. We also decided to go out for a nice anniversary dinner at one of Manchester's top rated Thai restaurants. Unfortunately for the restaurant Kim and I both have very high standards for Thai food. We both rated the food as average, therefore I will not waste more words on it. I will say thank you to Kim's workmate, Anna, for her amazing homemade Thai food and our favourite take-away place, GO THAI, for giving us such high standards.
On the tourist front we wandered all over town and saw the amazing John Ryland library which looks like a church but is actually an ode to some of the greatest thinkers of our time. With diciples and scientists in stained glass side by side. It boasts some amazing architecture and great books that are works of art unto themselves. For the religous out there it also has peices of some of the earliest
scriptures ever found.
We also made the trek to football mecca: that's right Manchester United's Old Trafford. On our way we stopped by Old Trafford Cricket grounds. When asking if we could see the cricket pitch, they automatically launched into thier dumb and confused tourist spiel that "you must be confused and need to head down the street to the football grounds." We eventually just found our own way into the cricket stadium and took some photos.
We then went down the street for the ManU stadium tour, which was an hour and a half of some pretty interesting history. It still floors me that some Football clubs have a history that rivals Canada's both in age and content.
We then met up with a friend from SFU who I met while he was on exchange there. We spent a great few days with him and his family in Rochdale (not far from Manchester). Some of the highlights were private tours of Oldham Athletics and Rochdale's town hall. Sam had his spiel down pat: "my friends came all the way from Canada to see this, is there any chance someone could show us around?" Because everyone was
so nice, they did show us around. We got in a great hike with Sam and his dog Libby one day and were also part of a winning pub quiz team (although officially we came second - our spies told us the number one team won by using a smart phone).
Big thanks to Sam and his family for being such great hosts, feeding us, driving us around, introducing us to 'green things' candy, and giving up their time and space for us.
Our next adventure was to begin with a train ride to Edinburgh.
