Jeneva and I passing the time during our emergency landing in JFK Yesterday May 12th:
Today I sit in airports. My relationship with airports is love:hate. I think the collection of diverse people all on different sorts of adventures is incredible. For a shy person like me, the number of solo travellers interested in conversation is nervewrecking :-P Haha. Suince my 1:00pm flight from Philly to Atlanta was delayed to 3:00pm, I got a bite to eat. I sat with Sharon, who is traveling to Costa Rica to sell some of her properties there. Earlier I was talking to Tom whose daughter really wants to play college volleyabll or aksetball and is traveling to Atlanta on business. My hate relationship with aiports is how rushed and rude people are, not to mention how nothing seems to happen when they say it will. As a group, airline travellers have little respect for airline workers or fellow travellers. It amkes me mad, but somehow my excitement for my trip keeps me giddy.
Dad went into work late this morning so that he could drive me to the airport. Since the moment I woke up, I've been beyond tired. We stopped at Barnes & Nobles and I picked up the book @How the Irish saved Civilization@.
Fashion Statement
Eye shades are the new headbands. You'll see, London's starting a trend now :) It's funny so far, but I'm too tired to focus on the words. Dad and I took bets on how heavy my pack would be when they weighed it at check-in. I choose 35 lbs, he choose 40lbs. Boy were we both wrong! It weighed in at 22 lbs. Crazy to believe I'm going to Europe for 2 1/2 months with just a 22lb backpack of belongings.
I arrived in Atlanta at 5:10pm. My connecting flight to London took off at 5:25pm, exactly 2 minutes after I arrived at the gate. So I was put on the next flight leaving at a delayed 7 pm. I should arrive in London at 8:30am now, not that that will happen. My plans for joining the free tour of london at 10am are shot.
I had some extra time in Atlanta, I exchanged money so I would have some pounds on me when I arrived (haha, that makes me sound fat!) I just about choked when 60 pounds and 100 Euro cost 313 dollars! Really, our country needs to get jumping back!
I got on the flight to London from Atlanta, but a hydrolic leak made our plane do an emergency landing in
Ready to Go!
Safely landed in London, backpack on and ready to go! JFK. So I left Philadelphia today, supposed to be 1 o'clock and at 10:30pm I land in JFK, New York. An airport that is maybe a 2 hour DRIVE from Philadelphia! What a crazy start to my trip. I really hope that its not an omen. On a brighter note, I'm actually loving the British accents. The guy next to me on the flight to JFK, keeps saying "bloody" and "bugger". It makes me laught. Plus Delta offers complementary alcoholic beverages, probably to keep us from coherentlyh recognizing that we're mad at them. It's working.
In our layover in JFK, I met this girl Jeneva on the same flight. She's also backpacking! She bought a bottle of tequila. I brought the cards. Enough said. We had fun in our layover. Then we reboarded our plane and the guy next to her agreed to switch seats with me. There is not hope for sleep now becuase Jeneva is basically awesome. I did get about 3 hours of rough sleep time, but like people say "half the fun really is getting there".
