LICC Toolbox Course I stayed at
Carr-Saunders Hall Monday-Thursday night - was pretty impressed, £30 single-room B&B in central London. Yes, it was basic, but it was all clean and it's basically just student halls which were not in use by students! The meals we had at LICC (
St Peter's, Vere Street), provided by Norton and Carolyn (from Australia) were beautiful, varied and healthy! Kept us going through our 12-14 hour marathon days. Such an intense course, but brilliant... all working under
Chatham House rules.
Monday - Having thought I WAS already in London, it took longer than I expected to get from Greenwich, so I was a bit late, and had missed all the LICC staff introductions, but I soon picked up that all the participants were introducing themselves: name; occupation; favourite film/book/music so I was prepared as it came to me last!
- Session 1: Whole Life Christianity & Today's World (Mark Greene)
- Session 2: The Bible in Context (Helen Parry)
- Session 3: Engaging with Contemporary Culture (Mark Greene)
- Session 4: How Then Shall We Live? Group reflection
- Session 5: Reading Film (Mark Greene)
In the evening I managed to catch up with Sarah Lyndon who I'd made friends with on my Oak Hall Lauterbrunnen trip - she'd taught me how not to fall over
in deep-powder snow, or at least fall over less! We checked me into Carr-Saunders Hall, then made our way to the pub round the corner, chatted for an hour over a soft drink (first day had already tired me out, and Sarah had just flown back from New Zealand!). Her man came to pick her up, and I went back to try and crash out!
Tuesday - Session 1: A Biblical World View (Helen Parry)
- Session 2: 21st Century Life & Soul, Part 1 (Brian Draper)
- Session 3: Christians in Action, The London Tour. Starting and ending at St Paul's Cathedral (exterior only) (John Martin)
- Session 4: Group Case Presentation preparation
- Session 5: How Then Shall We Live? Group reflection
- Session 6: 21st Century Life & Soul, Part 2 (Brian Draper)
Well, there was all kinds of things I was going to do this evening (e.g. find an internet cafe), but no, absolutely shattered, so grabbed the
Mills & Boon I'd picked up and devoured half of it!
Wednesday *Pre-day: Meet for Bible Study over breakfast*Session 1: How then should we live: ways & means (Margaret Killingray)*Session 2: Understanding Media (Mark Greene)*Lunch: A theology of shopping:
Selfridges*Session 3: Interpreting Consumerism (Mark Greene)*Session 4: How then should we live: the
moral maze (Margaret Killingray)*Evening: Odeon for
Atonement, followed by meal in
ZizziOK, so this was the longest day of the week. I really enjoyed seeing Selfridges through different eyes, and hearing about the stores that others had been to. I'd expected to find the film really disturbing, but actually I didn't (and was very excited by the advert for
australia.com before the film - the fireworks for NY Eve look AMAZING!), and was not quite sure what I thought of it or whether I'd recommend it... I noticed too many World War II cliches I think! Provided good material for discussion over dinner though!
Thursday - Session 1: How then should be live: the world of work (Margaret Killingray)
- Session 2: Getting Values to Work (Mark Greene)
- Session 3: Reading Worldview Through Art at the Tate Modern
- Session 4: Feedback on Tate
- Session 5: Group Case Presentation preparation
We could have stayed preparing our presentation til late, but we made a decision that we would finish the first one before dinner, and the second between 8-9 (think we managed it by 8.30), so that was good! Not sure what I thought of the Tate Modern - I've been before, for about 15 minutes before we spent
about 3 hours in the pub next door! Was really disappointed that the main hall was closed between exhibits, but found plenty of other things to look at - the most interesting of which were a) the building b) the people in the building and their interaction with the exhibits c) the shop, which was the fullest part of the building!
Friday- Pre-session: Our group did the worship (Tuesday/Thursday and Friday included Worship and "Worldwatch"), which took the form of using the craft table as a personal response to the week.
- Session 1: Globalisation & The Global Disciple (Helen Parry)
- Morning: Group Presentations 1 (we did ours on love)
- Afternoon: Group Presentations 2 (we did ours on redundancy, the different aspects)
- Session 4: Final Thoughts
All the group presentations were entirely different (although obviously some overlap was visible!) and thoroughly enjoyable - people had got so many different things out of the week, had been challenged in so many different ways, and were getting ready to go back out into the real world. We finished with a large group photograph, then a small group prayer for each of us as we go back/out to what is next!
