Today we were catching the 10am ferry from Dunkirk to Dover so we left just before 9am to give us enough time to get to the port as you needed to be there at least 45 minutes before. It was another grey day, the drive wasn't too busy for a Monday and we reached the port bang on 9:15am. We chose Dunkirk as it was not only the closest it was also the cheapest and the least busiest. Calais apparently can be very busy as its the most popular being the shortest crossing but we didn't mind being on the ferry for 2 hours we were in no hurry. Loading the motorhome and going through immigration was straight forward, a French immigration officer came on board and checked all our large cupboard spaces, no doubt looking for illegals that may have smuggled themselves into our motorhome!. A couple of Aussies were in the lane beside us in a 4WDrive pulling a trailer, they told us they had shipped the Landcruiser all the way from Perth!
The crossing was very pleasant, the ferry was bigger than I expected and had a large cafe, shop and countless other services. Vaughan bought a
couple of Eurolight stickers and a Netherland's sticker as these were compulsory. Given our headlights are adjusted for left hand drive the stickers help with anti glare for right hand drivers. We spent some time on the deck but it was quite cold so didn't stay there for too long. I treated myself to a full English breakfast and looked forward to many more when in England. Before long we were approaching the White Cliffs so went outside to take photos. Disembarking was just as easy but suddenly switching to the other side of the road with the steering wheel on the wrong side wasn't! Vaughan found it strange to be sitting on the wrong side of the motorhome and he was drifting onto the cats eyes and I had to keep reminding him it was not comfortable riding the cats eyes! Our first stop was in Folkstone at the supermarket to load up on food where we could read the label! We also made a stop at Poundland and B&M to get some things for the motorhome at a cheap price. We took the scenic route along the coast going through Hastings and Bexhill on Sea. We thought tonight
we would try a pub stopover which was free and chose one that would get us there for about 5ish. We ended up at the Plough in Plumpton Green in East Sussex, I had an app on my phone called "Search for Sites" which gave me a list of places to stay around the UK including free pub stop overs. I had given the pub a ring to ask if it was OK and they were happy for us to camp in their car park for the night, we didn't eat there but we had a drink and sat in the beer garden. We think pub stop overs were going to be a common occurrence for us especially if they were free!
