Chiltern Open Air Museum

We are now feeling a certain amount of weariness as we journey, and back in London for two days we want to slow down a little and relax with our family here. With occasional breaks in the cloud and no hint of rain, we have a visit to the Chiltern Open Air Museum planned for this afternoon. Holly the dog can come on this outing and clearly approves of the plan.
A relatively short drive from Watford, this Museum is reached via narrow country roads once you are clear of London. A pleasant walk takes the visitor on a trail that passes many old buildings which have been brought on site. There are cottages of different sizes and ages and other historic buildings such as the High Wycombe Toll House where taxes were collected for George lV. These houses are set off by attractive small gardens. We explored a tin chapel and the old school room set up in a Thame Vicarage room. There were farm buildings and machinery, a forge and a well head that spoke when a coin was rolled down. We were interested in the Nissen Hut all set up for a

Amersham pre-fab house and Austin. pilots' briefing. This Museum is also a working farm with horses, cows, sheep and chickens. Holly the dog was a little taken aback by the three large farm horses that stood close to the fence. One of only two buildings that appeared to have been fully constructed on this site was a circular Iron Age house. It was fascinating to imagine life inside this shelter. We left this interesting Museum having thoroughly enjoyed our visit and feeling glad to be living with a few more mod cons than we had seen here.
There was just one thing left to do today. We scrubbed up and went out to an Italian restaurant for a truly delicious dinner. Great food and great company. An evening to remember.
