Trans-Siberian

Well, we have been planning the Trans-Siberian trip for a while, so it's a bit of a late start for the blog, but better late than never.

The planning started last September, when Dad suggested that he, my brother (Peter) and I do the trans-siberian trip together, it's something he's always wanted to do, and certainly after thinking about it I became attracted to the idea!

Initially we needed to decide when to do the trip, and fairly quickly we decided the middle of summer or winter would not be the best time, so came to the conclusion spring would be the best bet, with May being fairly optimal for weather right the way from Russia to Beijing.
The next stage was working out any essential places to stop, and fairly quickly we decided that we'd do the Trans-Mongolian route with the key stop-off points being Irukutsk (for Lake Baikal) and Ulan Batur, because it's Ulan Batur. Once we had this approximate idea, we started to get together a timetable with the more than capable assistance of Igor from RealRussia, which we bounced backwards & forwards a few times before settling more or less on the timetable below (assuming Russia doesn't change the timetables in the next few weeks!!)

01.05.09 Depart London St Pancras (Philip & David) & Chamonix (Peter) - meet in Cologne early evening
01.05.09 Depart Cologne 22:28 for Moscow, via Warsaw & Belarus
03.05.08 Arrive Moscow 10:59
04.05.09 Depart Moscow 23:25 (Train no 10)
08.05.09 Arrive Irkutsk 04:07
11.05.09 Depart Irkutsk 00:013
12.05.09 Arrive Ulan Bator 07:30
14.05.09 Depart Ulan Bator 08:05
15.05.09 Arrive Beijing 14:31

We have yet to decide what we're doing once we arrive in China, but have decided that we're doing another week, perhaps going to Xian or Guilin, or Hong Kong, or Shanghai......

23.05.09 return to UK/France

More to come as we finalise details...and then hopefully up to date information as we travel all the way, and of course plenty of photos....
