Markers were placed up the valley marking where the glacier had been over the past 100+ years.
The day was again clear with no wind. The mountains all around were bathed in sunshine. A good day for a hike. We had been recommended the walk up to the Morterasch Glacier as relatively. easy with a good track. We got a regional train to the small local station and were immediately on a well groomed path. How amazing to find paths in the snow in such good condition. We walked gradually uphill surrounded by high mountains and a typical glacial landscape. The moraine was banked up high on either side of the valley and occasionally you could see the original faces as the glacier receded back. The Swiss had put markers up the track marking where the glacier had been over the
years. At start of the track it had been there in 1874. As we advanced up the path the markers got closer for every 20 years, then 10 years and finally 5. The gap between each got shorter through time showing how fast the glacier was receding. At the face of the glacier were the usual huge blocks of ice falling off with an iced up stream flowing from it. The ice patterns were really lovely with

The likeness ismther, don't you agree? This was no doubt created by freeze and thaw. It markedmthe glacier at 1934
ice platforms like silica terraces at home. Also there were long icicles hanging off rocks and iced up waterfalls.

We brushed snow off a seat and had a picnic lunch surrounded by such magnificence. What could be a better place? It was extremely cold but we had on the best possible
gear to keep snug.

Back at the station we took a train to Pontresina where we debated about a stroll through the town. Instead we walked along a stream and through paddocks back to
Celerina for a nice hot chocolate to finish off another satisfying day.

This has been a common sight where water is running off rocks creating beautiful long icicles
