The train ride into Switzerland was exactly as we expected it to be...breathtaking. The transfer in Geneva meant seats for us on the train to Lucerne. We took a number of pictures as we rode speechless at the absolute beauty of the country-mountains, lakes, countrysides... We arrived in charming Lucern in the late afternoon and took a cab to the hotel though we could've found our way by foot if it hadn't been pouring. We checked into the hotel and relished the view from our window of a typical street in Lucerne. We settled in quickly and asked for directions to old Lucerne, which was only a 15 minute walk. We quickly realized that Lucerne was not too big and very walkable. The old part of Lucerne was beautiful with a river flowing through the city, a man made dam, and 2 historic bridges connecting parts of the city. We found a beautiful restaurant by the river with a vegetarian menu and enjoyed carrot soup and banana curry along with main plates with an Italian influence. In Switzerland, they speak French, German and Italian in certain parts. This influence was seen in their food. After dinner, we had plans to visit
a Jazz club which we soon discovered was a cafe with a jazz concert that has long finished by the time we reached there. We were looking forward to experiencing Swiss jazz but alas. We walked in the rain the rest of Vieux Lucerne only to stop for a late night gelato dessert at Move N Pick. At around 1130 we headed back to the hotel packing the map away not thinking we would need it in such a small town. Of course, our overconfidence led to getting LOST for about 30 minutes. It didnt help that all the streets sounded similar-Pillastraussen vs Pillsrassen etc. We still made it back to the hotel by 12:30 but not without learning a lesson.
Day 2: Lucerne
We had the morning in Lucerne so we strolled the streets after enjoying breakfast provided by the hotel and encountering an American who had moved to Switzerland because he had "given up on America". He rambled on about various conspiracy theories including his belief that nonprofits were set up to take over the world. He went on to ask us to be the change and change the system. We took nothing he said to heart
especially because he was asking us to change the system while he had "given up on America" and moved to Switzerland after making a ton of money in real estate. Puhh...leaseeee. The gentleman was one of the few people we had met thus far that we were not crazy about. We had lunch in vieux Lucerne and it was recommended that we try the cheese fondue that Swiss are know for. It was delicious. We quickly finished lunch and stopped to buy Swiss chocolate (another must) and made our way to the train station for our 4:00 train to Interlaken and Gimmewald. Our eyes were not prepared for what we would see....
