Well, we're home safe and all is well. I will update the travelblog from my notes since we were unable to locate internet cafes in Venice and Florence, and the one we found in Rome was not a great place to hang out! In Rotonda, Milena's father's computer had been sent in for service, so he offered his old iMac to check emails, but it was a tad bit slow, so travelblog updates were just not possible!

So, we headed off on the train on August 19 from Gothenburg, waving a tearful goodbye on the railway platform to Elisabeth and Berndt. Yes, at this point we left our safety net, and I have to admit that I thought to myself "Am I crazy to take off on a cross-European trip with an almost 8-year-old and a backpack?" "Is it too late to get off the train and spend the next two weeks here in beautiful Scandinavia?" However, I had just finished reading a great book entitled "What Would You Do If You Had No Fear? Living Your Dreams While Quakin' in Your Boots" (I highly recommend it to everyone!), so, I swallowed hard and looked down the train tracks. I'm

so glad I did!

We had a nice quiet journey from Gothenburg to Copenhagen, leaving at 11:30 and arriving late afternoon. We had three hours between trains, but my plans to wander around downtown Copenhagen were thwarted by a bunch of construction going on around the train station. We ate our only McDonald's of the trip in the train station, and spent the time wandering around and reading. We plan on coming back to actually stay in Copenhagen for a few days - Berndt, Nolan and I have planned our next trip to be "The Great Scandinavian Tour" to include Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagan and Gothenburg.

Our train to Munich left on time, and we had a great little room to ourselves with pull-down bunkbeds and sink. Toilet and shower were down the hall. We fell asleep to the passing lights of Denmark and awoke to the German countryside...not a bad way to travel! In Munich, we arrived a little early, and had an option to jump on an earlier train to Venice, but that would have involved a couple of transfers, and the savings of only an hour, so we stowed our mega-backpacks in a locker and set

off to see what the area around the Munich train station is like. Imagine strip clubs and pawnshops by day....woo hoo! We did find a great department store with one entire floor of toys and another entire floor of cool fabric, so Nolan came away with German Pokemon cards and Legos, and I came away with new curtains for the upstairs bathroom.

Our next train to Venice was the only time we encountered less than ideal travel accommodations. However, we lucked out and were sharing a seating area with two wonderful women from the US (Terri from Redmond, Oregon and Kim from San Clemente, CA) so the cramped corridors and dirty bathrooms became a distant memory. We look forward to keeping in touch. The toilets had no holding tanks, so when Nolan says he pooped in the Alps, he literally pooped in the Alps. It's a little disconcerting to look into the toilet bowl and see the tracks below....

Upon arrival in Venice, we quickly secured our reservations for our next train to Florence the following afternoon, and set off on foot to our bed & breakfast.
