At the top Friday we visited La Font Roja, a natural park about 2 hours away from Valencia. We listened to a lecture from a professional ornithologist, and then we headed out into the field. We hiked up a mountain, viewing plants and bird nest boxes along the way. The hike was tough! (Although our guide, who spoke no English, told us, in jest, that it was "an easy walk"...ha) Although our guide spoke no English, he was a great leader and kept us on our toes with his sense of humor.
Once we reached the top of the mountain, we took a much appreciated break and drank in the amazing views. After the hike down, we ate lunch (at 3:30...), another Menú del Día. The meal was fantastic. I loved every bit of it.
After lunch, we headed back out into the field to set up mist nets to catch birds. Their research centers around birds called "Great Tits" (seriously, that's the name) and Coal Tits. We set up the nets, waited for 20 minutes, and then went back...and we'd caught two birds! (one of each kind mentioned above) We recorded information, banded one bird, and then set them free...but before

On the road again... they were released I got to hold one!
It was a great trip, all around. I had a fantastic time. But whew, we were pooped!
