20th April
Last evening was a bit noisy – motorbikes, cars & ambulance sirens then blow me an air raid siren went off at around 4.54pm. (Rather precise for ‘around’) Call me old fashioned but...it was odd because as they have siesta here, people work through to 7 ish so it wasn’t time to clock off. Unless they were testing it, have I missed something important the BBC? It quietened down though & we slept well despite more rain in the night.
Up & Cathy did some washing as she found a free washing machine in the utility block, never seen her so excited since the last time we found one in Italy in 2015....
We were going to go to a supermarket but decided that we didn’t really need which was a result as it normally doesn’t deter Cathy one bit. The big chain in Portugal, next to Lidl, is Continente. When we’ve been in one before I was always hoping someone would ring so I could listen the their reaction when I said, “Good morning, I’m in Continente”.
Away North into Spain & across the mountains & more long, steep motorways with yet more wind
turbines, more than you could count. The wind was really whistling through the passes & at one point was right against us going up this huge mountain - Billy’s mpg dropping from his normal average of 28 to 13. On the top the temperature dropped to 11* & it was a fantastic landscape.
And here to the site near Galende, next to a lake in a National Park set in a deciduous forest this time & it is smashing. No cars, no motorbikes, no dogs, no air raid sirens & hopefully no ambulances- just the birds & the wind in the tree tops with the temperature back up to a nice 21* although we’re still quite high up. There are some pretty flowers here that look like miniature upside down daffodils which I thought were a form of snowdrop but Cathy thinks they’re a form of orchid. A long walk to wifi so someone let us know?!
We had a walk to the lakeside which is a beautiful spot & came back realising that we had lost an hour crossing the border, back to time confusion again. Hey ho. I have some dry skin from the sunshine but
being a chap I don’t have any body cream, so Cathy gave me some of hers that she had from a stay at a Crazy Bear hotel. I’m glad that there are only 3 other units on this site as I now smell like a tart’s boudoir, not that I have the faintest clue what one smells like but I’m guessing.
Tomorrow we are cycling 4km to the nearest village of Galende for a wander but also to try & buy bread as there are no deliveries here. We’ll probably walk half of it due to the hills. The site manager here has a look of Colin Firth about him though he had no idea who I was talking about
