Breakfast in Ages
Beautiful village - wish we stayed here! After a rather restless night in the "snore dome", we were more than ready to leave San Juan de Ortega and headed out about 8:30 a.m. After a pleasant few kilomteres, we found ourselves in an absolutely beautiful village, Ages. We found an awesome little cafe and bought some bocadillos (hammon & cueso) and, of course, a cafe con lecher (sooooo good here!). We wished that we had had enough energy to travel to Ages the day before as it is a much nicer town with several hostels and albergues.
San Juan de Ortega is a very special place (particularly the church); however there isn't really anything else there. One thing I did learn was that every year on June 21st at noon (the summer solstice), the sun shines into the church in a very specific fashion such that it illuminates a statue of the Virgin Mary. Apparently it is quite the sight, but unfortunately we will miss it by 2 days.
Met a very kind Basque man, Juan, travelling backward from Finisterra with his dog, Jack. He was incredibly kind and spent quite a bit of time talking with Andrew, Luzia and I. We scoped out our path
to Burgos as there are 3 ways of getting into there. The path to the right of the airport follows the expressway and is not one I would recommend. Another path just to the immediate left of the airport follows a more industrial route into Burgos; while the path to the left of that one follows the river.
We all agreed on following the river route; however, the way was very poorly marked and we ended up going about a 1/2 km along the wrong route until a kind jogger re-directed us. The walk into Burgos took about 3 hours from the edge of town (it is a relatively large city) and we were absolutely exhausted by the time we reached the municipal hostel around 5 pm.
Once again, we were bunking up in extremely tight quarters about 30 to a room. You could easily touch the person in the bunk next to you (only plus to this is that you can shake them to stop them snoring a little easier). Needless to say, it was another snorefest with people getting up as early as 5 am. - but what we are learning is that this is the
