An all-day coach trip to Salamanca was the agenda for today. From Barca d'Alba we crossed the Águeda river, a Douro tributary, to enter Spain. The mountains of Portugal extended briefly into Spain, but shortly thereafter we were crossing the high plateau of central Spain, known as the Meseta, This region is part of Castille and Léon. Catedral Nueva - New Cathedral. Capilla Mayor - Main Chapel (altar). The Main Chapel, built in the second half of the 18th century is topped by a lavish polychrome and gold vault, which covers the tabernacle made by the Churrigueras as an architectural canopy. Today, presiding over the enclosure, under a velvet hanging, it preserves an image of the Assumption made in 1624 by Esteban de Rueda. IMG_8253

Old Cathedral - La Catedral Vieja. Nave del Evangelio. Arcosolium in the wall containing the altar of Santa María la Blanca. Tradition has it that it was brought to the Old Cathedral when the Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca was destroyed in a flood in 1626. The altarpiece is made up of fifty-three wooden panels, distributed in eleven rows and five bodies columns, ordered from bottom to top and from left to right. The Last Judgment crowns the ensemble in the quarter sphere. Painted by Daniel, Samson and Nicolás Delli in the 15th century. "The principal apse contains a huge fresco of the Last Judgment, below which, in Gothic frames, are 55 pictures on wood of scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin. These were all painted by Nicolas Florentine in 1445 et seq.. except the middle panels of the two lower rows, which are later additions".--Baedeker 1913. DSC_0203

Salamanca
Salamanca has always eluded me on my travels to Spain and I need to rectify that on the next visit! What a beautiful city. I love the 1977 vs 2022 photos. Cheers. Ren :)
