Reisje in de PYRENEEEN. 17 t/m 27 september 2023



dag 1, 17 september:



Vanaf Benidoleig via de AP 7 richting Barcelona verder via Ripoll en de nieuwe Toyota zoeft lekker door en uiteindelijk stoppen we in Ribes de Freser. Mooi uitgangspunt om de La Vall de Nuria te bezoeken.

We rijden na het inchecken een stukje de berg op naar het plaatsje Queralbs. Daar stopt ook de tandradtrein naar Nuria. Leuk middeleeuws dorpje.







dag 2, 18 september:



Om La Vall de Nuria te bezoeken moeten we met een tandradtrein. Er bevinden zich daar een bedevaartsoord en een skioord. Het treinstation is om de hoek van ons hotel en de vorige dag hebben we al kaartjes gekocht. Alleen….. Zo moet een muilkorf op in de trein. Dat is een heel gevecht maar gelukkig is het niet druk en laten we de muilkorf af. Er is geen controle pfff. Hetzelfde verhaal in de skigondel. We zitten inmiddels boven de 2.000 meter met schitterende uitzichten en fantastisch weer. Er zijn toppen van 3.000 meter, de Puigmal, waar geskied wordt in de winter. We wandelen een stuk en lopen dan het deel van de skigondel naar beneden naar het treinstation.







Daar zijn winkels, het bedevaartsoord en een restaurant. Mooi gebouw, water en veel

gras. Na ongeveer 4 uur nemen we de tandradtrein weer terug naar Ribes de Freser.

In de middag besluiten we naar Beget te rijden om dat dit aangegeven staat als 1 van de mooiste dorpjes. Via een afschuwelijke steile offgrid omweg, omdat de normale weg was afgesloten, komen we uiteindelijk in Beget.







Het dorp is klein maar prachtig met de stenen huizen. Er is 1 hostal/bar in het dorp en net toen wij na zoveel moeite aankwamen ging het dicht. Die kerel weigerde ons iets te drinken te geven. Op de terugweg, de weg was na 6 uur weer open, hebben in Ripoll gegeten.



dag 3, 19 september:



Het weer blijft prachtig. Onderweg een koffie gedronken bij een mooi klein treinstation in Tosses. Verder naar La Seu d’Urgell. Leuke stad met mooi centrum en gezellige markt.









Daarna door naar Sort. Sort betekent geluk in het Catalaans daarom is er een zeer bekende loterijwinkel, la Bruixa d’Or (de gouden heks) gevestigd. In dit gebied is er voornamelijk veel sport te doen. Skiën, kayakken, hiking, mountenbiken en canyoning.

Er is een grote rivier met een wildwater kanobaan.



Eind stop voor vandaag is Taull. Dit is het wandelparadijs.









dag 4, 20 september:



In de ochtend in het National Park Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici gewandeld. Veel water en watervallen. Heerlijk voor Zoe. Het hoofd doel vandaag is Aisna. Prachtig middeleeuwsdorp op een berg met kasteel en gezellig oud plein. Plaza Mayor. Het was tijd voor de lunch dus maar 1 van de gezellige restaurantjes gekozen.







Jan heeft een mooi t-shirt gekocht. In de middag in Garganta de Escuain gewandeld. Deze vallei van Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido is redelijk onbekend maar niet minder mooi. Via smalle paadjes omhoog. Leuke route gelopen en wederom prachtig uitzicht met zon. En….. Jan ging onderuit. Geschaafde arm dus niet al te erg.









dag 5, 21 september:

Vandaag gaan we de grens over naar Frankrijk, naar Gavarnie. Daar hebben we jaren geleden ook mooi gewandeld en we willen dit weer doen. We rijden door de Bielsa Tunnel, 3 km lang. Om 10.30 uur zijn we in Frankrijk. Prachtige route door de Haute-Pyrenees. We passeren veel kleine dorpjes waaronder Parzan.

Saint-Lary-Soulan is een pracht wintersport dorp.







Hier stoppen we voor een koffietje en lopen door het gezellige dorp. Om 15.00 zijn we via Lourdes bij Gavarnie en net als we gaan wandelen gaat het stort regenen. We lopen toch door tenslotte zijn we Hollanders maar na een uur of ander half zijn we kletsnat terug bij de auto. Toch wel leuk om het weer te zien. Blijft een prachtig gebied.





Terug in Lourdes, waar we slapen, blijft het regenen. Gelukkig hebben we Lourdes al een paar jaar geleden bezocht. Wel jammer maar geen ramp. Toch lopen we nog naar de bedevaartsplaats waar veel gehandicapte mensen in rolstoelen zitten en hopen op genezing.







Om 20.00 uur werd het weer droog en dit was alle regen tijdens onze vakantie.





dag 6, 22 september:



We gaan weer snel terug naar Spanje via Tunel de Somport, 8,6 km lang en zijn gelijk in Canfranc. We zijn nog steeds redelijk hoog. Canfranc ligt op 1.040 m hoogte. Jan heeft wel een beetje last van al deze hoogten. Hij doet wat rustiger aan maar het gaat goed. Het eerste wat je ziet is het prachtige, grote en statige treinstationhotel. Het is het gebouwd voor de internationale treinverbinding. Tegenwoordig is het een Spaans eindstation, waar slechts 2x per dag een trein stopt. Het gebouw is een van de grootste stationsgebouwen van Europa.



Het treinstation is gebruikt tijdens het filmen van Doctor Zhivago.

Op het terrein achter het hotel staan nog oude wagons en andere oude attributen van treinen. Het is de moeite zeker waard om te bezoeken.







Verder naar Jaca. Echt een leuke, gezellige stad met een Ciudad la Estrella. Een prachtige vesting als ster gebouwd met een groene (gras) kasteelgracht waar herten in lopen. Zoe kreeg er geen genoeg van.







Daarna naar Sos del Rey Catolico. Deze plaats kregen we als tip van Peter en Ann. Was wel leuk maar we hadden al mooie dorpjes gezien.

De avond hebben we in een druk maar gezellig Pamplona doorgebracht. De kathedraal, Plaza del Toro, de kerk, Plaza de Castillo, hier was een boekenmarkt, het oude centrum en natuurlijk de straat waar de stieren 1x per jaar doorheen moeten rennen gezien.







dag 7, 23 september:



En weer volop zonneschijn. Op naar Bilbao. Wat een mooi historisch centrum. We beginnen bij Museo Guggenheim Bilbao. Een pareltje om te zien. De buitenkant is een reflectie van de visserstraditie van de stad met de titanium en schubvormige platen. Rondom het museum was een groep aan het dansen, de finish van de Alzheimerloop was hier en er is kunst. Zoals de reuzenspin met het marmeren ei en de Flower Puppy. Een kolossale West Highland-terrier die bedekt is met perkplanten en bloemen.







Weer een kerk, parken, de Santiago-kathedraal, de Zubizuri brug over de Nervion rivier, het Arriaga Theater, Plaza Nueva in het oude centrum omringd door gebouwen waarbij de onderste verdieping bestaat uit bogen met veel barretjes en restaurants, en nog veel meer. En…… Voetbalclub Athletic Bilbao is de grote trots van Bilbao in stadion San Mames.







Door naar Getaria aan de kust. Zoe was voor de 1ste keer sinds de vakantie weer op het strand. Ze heeft het gemist en rende als een gek over het strand de zee in.

Gezellig stadje om een ijsje te eten.

Een bekende plek aan het strand hier is El Peine del Viento (de kam van de wind). Waar de stad eindigt en de zee begint staan een aantal kunstwerken. Hier omhelzen de golven de steile kliffen en de wind kan door de kunstwerken de baai binnen waaien.







Hoe wilder de zee hoe spectaculairder de golven op de rotsen beuken.

We slapen in Irun, in de Ibis, Prima hotel voor Zoe was er een speeltje en wat lekkers.



dag 8, 24 september



Via Irun naar Hondarribia, naar het strand. Mooi strand en vol met honden. Dikke pret dus voor Zoe. Drukke jachthaven en een boulevard.. Het stadje zelf is gezellig.

Op naar San Sebastian, in het Baskisch Donostia. Als 1ste gaan we naar het voetbalstadion.







Door de hele stad en ver daar buiten zien we mensen in blauw-witte voetbalshirts lopen en ja, om 14.00 uur begint de wedstrijd tegen Getafe en we zijn er om 13.30 uur. Lekker druk dus. Parkeren is een drama dus we staan ergens waar het niet mag en Zoe en ik wachten zodat Jan het stadion kan bezichtigen en een sjaal kan kopen.

Het is tijd om naar de oude binnenstad van San Sebastian te gaan en we willen het Monte Urgull, de heuvel met het Christusbeeld bezoeken. De berg is 123 meter hoog en het beeld is 30 meter hoog. Maar we halen het. Het is een pittige wandeling maar het uitzicht over de stad is prachtig.







Bij de Kathedraal del Buen Pastor eten we een hapje. Het is overal erg druk want het SSIFF (San Sebastian Internacional Film Festival) is in de stad. Bij bioscopen, theaters en sjieke hotels liggen rode lopers en staan fans klaar om een foto van hun idool te maken.



dag 9, 25 september:



Vanochtend rijden we vanaf ons hotel 4 kilometer naar fazanteneiland. (Isla de los Faisanes). Het ligt midden in de rivier en de Spaans-Franse grens ook. Het eiland is 6 maanden van Spanje en 6 maanden van Frankrijk. We hebben geen fazant gezien maar het is een historische plek. Midden op het eiland staat een steen ter herdenking aan het Verdrag van de Pyreneeen welke daar in 1659 is gesloten.







Verder naar Huesca via de A-240. Prachtige route langs een groot meer en veel rivieren.

Bij de A-132 langs een prachtig oud stuwmeer gewandeld waar het water met veel kracht uit de rotsen naar beneden stort. Hier cirkelden veel roofvogels en gieren.







Huesca zelf heeft een gezellig plein met restaurantjes en natuurlijk een kerk en kathedraal maar is verder niet heel bijzonder.





dag 10, 26 september:



Vandaag is het plan om naar El Salto de Roldan te gaan. Dit is een rotsformatie in Pac Nacional Sierra y Canones de Guara in de uitlopers van de centrale Pyreneeen met punten boven de 1.000 meter hoogte. Natuurlijk gaan we wandelen en genieten van de tientallen gieren die boven ons cirkelen of opstijgen van de rotsen van San Miguel en Aman.







Sommigen hebben een vleugelwijdte van 2,5 meter.



Onderweg komen we langs vele varkenshouderijen, grote stallen en veel stank. En er zijn veel Bodega’s dus veel druiven en wijn verkoop.



Op naar Alquezar, een middeleeuwsdorp, dat staat op de lijst van mooiste dorpen van Spanje, omringd door het prachtige Sierra de Guara 660 meter hoogte. De blikvanger is de majestueuze burchtkerk Santa Maria. Het plein is ook gezellig en wij nemen een drankje en taart op het “verborgen” terras van Bar Villacantal met uitzicht.

































Onze laatste overnachting is in Lleida, weer in een Ibus al vond ik de Ibis in Irun veel beter maar het was zeker niet slecht.

De stad zelf heeft een mooie winkelstraat met natuurlijk een kerk en de kathedraal op een flinke heuvel wat weer een flinke klim betekende maar prachtig uitzicht en een restaurant voor een wijntje en biertje.











dag 11, 27 september:



Het is mooi geweest. We hebben een prachtige vakantie gehad en we besluiten lekker naar huis te rijden.

14.30 uur zijn we weer thuis. Zoe blij.

Ongeveer +2.200 km gereden.





Trip in the PYRENEES. September 17 to 27, 2023



day 1, September 17:



From Benidoleig via the AP 7 towards Barcelona, continue via Ripoll and the new Toyota zooms along nicely and finally we stop in Ribes de Freser. Nice starting point to visit the La Vall de Nuria.

After checking in, we drive a bit up the mountain to the town of Queralbs. The cog train to Nuria also stops there. Nice medieval village.







day 2, September 18:



To visit La Vall de Nuria we have to take a cog train. There is a pilgrimage site and a ski resort there. The train station is around the corner from our hotel and we already bought tickets the day before. Only... This is how a muzzle should be worn on the train. That's quite a fight, but luckily it's not busy and we leave the muzzle off. There is no control pfff. Same story in the ski gondola. We are now above 2,000 meters with beautiful views and fantastic weather. There are peaks of 3,000 meters, the Puigmal, where you can ski in the winter. We walk a bit and then walk the part of the ski gondola down to the train station.







There are shops, the pilgrimage site and a restaurant. Beautiful building, water and lots of it

grass. After about 4 hours we take the cog train back to Ribes de Freser.

In the afternoon we decide to drive to Beget because it is indicated as one of the most beautiful villages. Via a terribly steep off-grid detour, because the normal road was closed, we finally arrive in Beget.







The village is small but beautiful with its stone houses. There is 1 hostal/bar in the village and just when we arrived after so much effort it closed. That guy refused to give us anything to drink. On the way back, the road was open again after 6 hours, we had dinner in Ripoll.



day 3, September 19:



The weather remains beautiful. Had a coffee along the way at a beautiful little train station in Tosses. Continue to La Seu d'Urgell. Nice city with a beautiful center and cozy market.









Then on to Sort. Sort means luck in Catalan, which is why a very famous lottery shop, la Bruixa d'Or (the golden witch) is located there. There is mainly a lot of sports to do in this area. Skiing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and canyoning.

There is a large river with a whitewater canoe course.



Final stop for today is Taull. This is the hiking paradise.









day 4, September 20:



In the morning we walked in the Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Lots of water and waterfalls. Wonderful for Zoe. The main target today is Aisna. Beautiful medieval village on a mountain with castle and cozy old square. Plaza Mayor. It was time for lunch so we chose one of the cozy restaurants.







Jan bought a nice t-shirt. In the afternoon we walked in Garganta de Escuain. This valley of Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido is relatively unknown but no less beautiful. Uphill via narrow paths. Nice route and again beautiful views with sun. And... Jan fell. Scuffed arm so not too bad.









day 5, September 21:

Today we cross the border into France, to Gavarnie. We also had a nice walk there years ago and we want to do it again. We drive through the Bielsa Tunnel, 3 km long. We arrive in France at 10:30 am. Beautiful route through the Haute-Pyrenees. We pass many small villages including Parzan.

Saint-Lary-Soulan is a beautiful winter sports village.







Here we stop for a coffee and walk through the pleasant village. At 3 p.m. we arrive at Gavarnie via Lourdes and just as we start walking it starts to rain heavily. We continue walking, after all, we are Dutch, but after about an hour and a half we are back at the car, soaking wet. Still nice to see it again. Remains a beautiful area.





Back in Lourdes, where we sleep, it continues to rain. Fortunately, we already visited Lourdes a few years ago. A pity, but not a disaster. Yet we still walk to the pilgrimage site where many disabled people sit in wheelchairs and hope for healing.







At 8 p.m. it became dry again and this was all the rain during our holiday.





day 6, September 22:



We quickly return to Spain via Tunel de Somport, 8.6 km long and immediately arrive in Canfranc. We are still quite high. Canfranc is located at an altitude of 1,040 m. Jan is a bit bothered by all these heights. He's taking it a bit slower, but he's doing well. The first thing you see is the beautiful, large and stately train station hotel. It was built for the international train connection. Nowadays it is a Spanish terminal station, where a train only stops twice a day. The building is one of the largest station buildings in Europe.



The train station was used during the filming of Doctor Zhivago.

On the grounds behind the hotel there are still old wagons and other old train attributes. It is definitely worth a visit.







Continue to Jaca. A really nice, pleasant city with a Ciudad la Estrella.A beautiful fortress built as a star with a green (grass) castle moat where deer walk. Zoe couldn't get enough of it.







Then to Sos del Rey Catolico. We received this place as a tip from Peter and Ann. It was fun, but we had already seen beautiful villages.

We spent the evening in a busy but cozy Pamplona. The cathedral, Plaza del Toro, the church, Plaza de Castillo, here was a book market, the old center and of course the street through which the bulls have to run once a year.







day 7, September 23:



And plenty of sunshine again. On to Bilbao. What a beautiful historic center. We start at Museo Guggenheim Bilbao. A gem to see. The exterior is a reflection of the city's fishing tradition with its titanium and scale-shaped plates. A group was dancing around the museum, the finish of the Alzheimer's run was here and there is art. Such as the giant spider with the marble egg and the Flower Puppy. A colossal West Highland terrier covered in bedding plants and flowers.







Another church, parks, the Santiago Cathedral, the Zubizuri bridge over the Nervion river, the Arriaga Theater, Plaza Nueva in the old center surrounded by buildings where the bottom floor consists of arches with many bars and restaurants, and much more. And…… Football club Athletic Bilbao is the great pride of Bilbao in the San Mames stadium.







On to Getaria on the coast. Zoe was back on the beach for the first time since the holidays. She missed it and ran like crazy across the beach into the sea.

Nice town to eat an ice cream.

A well-known spot on the beach here is El Peine del Viento (the crest of the wind). Where the city ends and the sea begins there are a number of works of art. Here the waves hug the steep cliffs and the wind can blow through the works of art into the bay.







The wilder the sea, the more spectacular the waves crash on the rocks.

We sleep in Irun, in the Ibis, Great hotel for Zoe, there was a toy and something tasty.



day 8, September 24



Via Irun to Hondarribia, to the beach. Beautiful beach and full of dogs. So great fun for Zoe. Busy marina and a boulevard. The town itself is pleasant.

On to San Sebastian, in Basque Donostia. First we go to the football stadium.







Throughout the city and far beyond we see people in blue and white football shirts and yes, the match against Getafe starts at 2 p.m. and we will be there at 1.30 p.m. So nice and busy. Parking is a problem so we park somewhere where it is not allowed and Zoe and I wait so that Jan can tour the stadium and buy a scarf.

It's time to go to the old town of San Sebastian and we want to visit Monte Urgull, the hill with the statue of Christ. The mountain is 123 meters high and the statue is 30 meters high. But we'll make it. It is a tough walk but the view over the city is beautiful.







We have a snack at the Cathedral del Buen Pastor. It is very busy everywhere because the SSIFF (San Sebastian Internacional Film Festival) is in town. Cinemas, theaters and fancy hotels have red carpets and fans are ready to take a photo of their idol.



day 9, September 25:



This morning we drive 4 kilometers from our hotel to Pheasant Island. (Isla de los Faisanes). It is located in the middle of the river and so is the Spanish-French border. The island is 6 months from Spain and 6 months from France. We didn't see any pheasant but it is a historic place. In the middle of the island there is a stone commemorating the Treaty of the Pyrenees, which was concluded there in 1659.







Continue to Huesca via the A-240. Beautiful route along a large lake and many rivers.

At the A-132 we walked past a beautiful old reservoir where the water crashes down from the rocks with great force. Many birds of prey and vultures circled here.







Huesca itself has a pleasant square with restaurants and of course a church and cathedral, but otherwise it is not very special.





day 10, September 26:



Today the plan is to go to El Salto de Roldan. This is a rock formation in Pac Nacional Sierra y Canones de Guara in the foothills of the central Pyrenees with points above 1,000 meters altitude. Of course we will go for a walk and enjoy the dozens of vultures that circle above us or take off from the rocks of San Miguel and Aman.







Some have a wingspan of 2.5 meters.



Along the way we pass many pig farms, large stables and lots of stench. And there are many Bodegas, so a lot of grapes and wine sales.



On to Alquezar, a medieval village, which is on the list of most beautiful villages in Spain, surrounded by the beautiful Sierra de Guara 660 meters above sea level. The eye-catcher is the majestic castle church of Santa Maria. The square is also cozy and we have a drink and cake on the “hidden” terrace of Bar Villacantal with a view.

Our last overnight stay is in Lleida, again in an Ibus, although I thought the Ibis in Irun was much better, but it was certainly not bad.

The city itself has a beautiful shopping street with of course a church and the cathedral on a large hill, which meant a steep climb but beautiful views and a restaurant for a wine and beer.











day 11, September 27:



It's been nice. We had a wonderful holiday and we decided to drive home.

We are back home at 2.30 pm. Zoe happy.
