We’ve come to Bilbao, like most people, primarily to visit the Guggenheim Museum.
I don’t know much about it, apart from the distinctive exterior so am unsure what to expect, but the start is good. I didn’t know about “Puppy” the giant flower sculpture outside the entrance, but it is different and I like it. Inside the museum it is a welcome relief from the heat which we see reach 44C today. We have tickets in the afternoon that avoids the worst of it. but it is still hot walking around.
The Guggenheim like many art museums has many exhibits are not to my taste overall I come away liking the museum as it has very good vibe and doesn’t seem to need famous old works of art to make it work. I like the steel sculptures on the ground floor and the special exhibition on car design is right up my street, especially as they have a E-type Jaguar and James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 as examples of great car design.
While here we also visit the Fine Arts Museum, which probably has better famous artwork than Guggenheim and also do the usual tourist stuff in the
old town. The cathedral is considered a top sight, but as it is hemmed in by the old town is hard to appreciate. The heart of old town are 7 parallel streets so Bilbao does not have as many squares as many other old cities (say Barcelona) but the Plaza Nueva makes up for this. Add to this the distinctive Zubizuri pedestrian bridge and that is enough to make our short (and hot) visit worthwhile.
