Arcos is a great little town, but we are staying here three nights we are planning a couple of day trips. We had planned to travel to Granada, but Ruth had studied the maps lat evening and when we met for breakfast suggested it would be an aweful lot of traveling and thought a southern trip might be better. I've long since learned to listen to Ruth, soo when we hooked up with L&M we made the suggestion. They have been there on previous trips, so if we were ok with saving it for another trip they we up for the alternate plan. I took a picture from our bedroom window of our breakfast table, then we were off.
We had been trying to follow the roads indicated in green (scenic) for most of the trip and this would be no exception. Stopping at little villages for coffee and pastries. walking into the churches to watch their version of preparation for the street process and generally taking in the cultural experience. We head for "The Rock" but quickly determined we would be satisfied with a distant view. It is holy week so the Spanish are off for holiday, and I
didn't realize that Gibraltar is actually British, so we have to stand in line and deal with passport stuff. In addition, England has not bought into the Euro so we would have to deal with a change of money...all of which said "let's skip the hassle."
Turned out our decision was a good one as we came across a nation park up the hillside where we stopped to hike among the beatiful wildflowers and wind turbines. Additionally, the ladies took off after a herd of goats. The bonus was a great view of Africa.
We loved the scenery with it herds of livestock mostly goats. (Notice the creative goat condom on the foreground goat.) I'm not sure of the Toros you see along all the hillside, but I bought a small metal version to put on our bookshelf as a token of the trip. I was disappointed that none of the security check points made any comments as my backpack passed thru the xray machine.
We got back to Arcos in time to stroll the City and gaze over the cliff the city in perched on. We were disappointed to find that the running of the bulls
was until Sunday...we will be gone. Mike and I assured the ladies we would have participated if given the chance. And another street procession.
I'm curious if the Spanish spend a lot of time with their extended family or is it just because it's holy week. They do not really start eating out until 10:00pm or so and stay til after midnight. Kids are running around everywhere....fun to see!! It's been a couple of years since we have been in Europe, but in the past they said European families were choosing to have few or no kids. That is not the case now in Spain...kids and baby strollers everywhere.
After a search for tapas, beer and wine we're off to bed...doesn't get much better than this!!!
