hello friends!
lots has happened in spain since i've last written. the best news of the month is that i have internet! sooo, if you have skype we can talk for free! that's the beauty of skype. i do not, however, yet have a roommate...it's going to be a tough thing to accomplish.
i have to say that i really miss fall. i miss the leaves, the windy air, sweaters, pumpkin flavored things, apple cider, etc. etc. for those of you who know me well, you might find this very hard to believe...i think i'm going to miss winter. that's it! i said it. i think that i'm going to miss winter...not so much the cold, but the same sort of things...sweatpants, my trendy sweaters, fireplaces, snow (from inside it's pretty jajaja), hot cocoa, our christmas traditions, family, and most of all, my beloved starbucks lattes...they don't exist in Adra!
work continues to be great. i've made a lot of friends. there are a lot of good people in adra, and many of them i have met at the colegio. for some extra cash i'm giving private english lessons to people of all ages. people are very enthusiastic
Cabo de Gata
now imagine me 13 lbs lighter, lol to have a native speaking teacher. many of you do not know that there is another american girl working with me at the same school. she is 29 and her name is Sarah. she's also from pennsylvania--and we have tons in common. it is a huge blessing to have her here. she's my little America when i miss home.
two weeks ago i had the opportunity to go to cabo de gata with Sarah and her friend Rick from the UK. Cabo de Gata is a national park that contains some of the best beaches in Spain. The beach that I went to, Playa Monsul, was where Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed. It was very beautiful. I will post a couple of pictures of the park, but I need to get pictures of the beach from Sarah.
Amor, a friend of mine from school, has invited me a couple of times to come to her house and have lunch with her and her family---this is a supposedly a rare treat. the stereotype is that few people ever get invited to the homes of Spaniards--however, over and over the people i know have broken this stereotype.
Amor and her husband Manolo invited me to their second house in Motril last weekend. I got to spend the entire weekend with them getting to know another city..and practicing my Spanish of course 😊 Amor is the lead singer in a band and she had a gig in a pub last Saturday...so I spent the afternoon with the band as they practiced...and that evening after a couple of drinks and a dinner of complimentary tapas we went back to the pub for the concert. I had a great time. Amor writes all of the songs herself...and they're all in English! i was very impressed. The fun eventually came to an end. Sunday I got very sick. I was vomiting, I had terrible diarrhea, a fever, and chills. I spent all of last week at home. up until the following Sunday I only left my flat twice. Once to go pick up a prescription and the other time to take out the trash. I still have very bad diarrhea. Almost all of the other syptoms are gone. In 7 days i lost 6 kilos (13 lbs more or less). i'm still losing weight. i went to the doctor again yesterday
and got some new medicine. hopefully this will work better. for a week i'm on a strict diet of 3 veggies (peas, carrots, and green beans), cooked rice, bananas, and plain yogurt. that's all i'm allowed to eat. thankfully, that's not the end. God has blessed me so much. i am surrounded by very good people. people have come to my flat, cooked me dinner, brought me groceries and medicine, and washed my dishes. i am very well cared for. i just want to get better.
well, that's a very quick update of what i've been up to the last couple of weeks...hopefully someday i'll get to share more observations instead of just a recap of the latest happenings. i miss you all. please keep in touch.
much love,
katie
