Oh our aching heads! Our night drinking with the Irish newly weds in Bled certainly helped us kill a lot of brain cells! When will I ever learn not to mix my drinks - an aching head, eyes that did not want to open and a mouth that tasted like the bottom of a budgie cage. If we had not already booked an apartment in Ljubljana then we would have extended our stay in Bled. We packed up and did our best to drive to the Slovenian capital - it was not fun!
We found our way to the apartment building and got completely lost in the under ground car park. Slovenian signs can be a bit hard to fathom when your brain is not working! We were so thankful to finally get ourselves in the apartment and into to bed for a long afternoon sleep. Later in the evening we took a walk to the nearby shops and discovered that Ljubljana has more bars than food shops, there seemed to be a bar every 500 metres. Our next observation was that red was the new blond when it came to womens hair colour choices (these two observations were reinforced
over the days that we stayed in Ljubljana).
Markets, Dragons, Castles With Slovenia having a total population of about two million it came as no surprise that the Slovenian capital was not a huge city, it was just the right size for a few days exploring. Some of the sights included the Dragon Bridge, the castle overlooking the city and the produce markets in the centre of town. Oh, and a bar and a bar every 500 metres and lots of red haired women!
TV Stars Thanks to Couchsurfing we made an appearance on Slovenian TV, together with Tone - a CS member we had contacted in Ljubljana. We got a message via CS from a TV presenter who wanted to interview various people for a story on Couchsurfing. So, when we met up with Tone for coffee, with his oldest daughter, they got a bit of a surprise when a TV crew turned up not long after to interview us.
Tone's daughter disappeared real fast when she saw the TV crew. Tone did not have a chance to escape because Lorenza had grabbed him by the shirt sleeve and refused to let him go.
This was a funny experience and we did our best to explain why we loved CS and travel. Afterward, we went with the TV crew to a bar to meet up with some more folks from CS - this was a fun night and an international group.
The segment on Slovenian TV was available online for about 1 month, but we did not get the chance to download it for posterity. Did anyone out there save it? Oh, the bar we met up with the CS folks in was called the Coffee Project and sold great home brew beer - worth a visit.
Around Ljubljana We took a look around a few places close by Ljubljana, we had a picnic on the banks of the river Sava at Dragocajna. Then we visited a town called Skofja Loka, which was reputed to be one of the oldest Slovenian towns.
Back in Ljubljana that night we decided to have a belated celebration of Lorenza's birthday by treating ourselves to a very nice restaurant meal and some lovely wine. Lorenza picked the rump steak and I decided on the foal fillet, matched with a 2005 Carolina Pinot Noir.
After dinner we took a walk and noticed there was a free open air ballet show on not far from the restaurant. We watched a bit of this but it was a little crowded so we opted to return to the Coffee Project for a few home brew beers.
Seeing it was Friday night, Lorenza decided to give Russell and Fay a call back in Australia to tell them we were missing their company for Friday night drinks. I told Lorenza she would be waking them up as it was about 6am on Saturday morning back home. She dialed the number none the less and got a surprise to find that they were already up and about at that early hour - first time ever perhaps?
