Giurgu
Today was sad as it was our last morning on the ship. We did our usual of eating early but then we came back and pushed our suitcases out into the hall. Around 8:30 we boarded our bus. The ship was docked in Giurgu, Romania but we were traveling to Bucharest. This was about an hour drive. The bus drove thru a bit of Giurgu and the got on the road to Bucharest. They did a bathroom stop at a filling station since there is nothing like a rest stop around here. Our guide told us a lot of Romanian history during the trip. The first thing Susan and I noticed was that we could read the signs again. We were back where they used the Latin letters, plus, we could understand a bit of the language. It is another one of the Romance languages and counting was like Spanish.

We arrived in Bucharest and they drove us around the town a bit. Bucharest has a variety of architecture some from the Hapsburg time, some from the Ottoman time, some from the communist time, and other modern. They were all intermixed. At least in Bucharest, they were renovating the blocks

of flats so that they would look much better and not so “Soviet”. Then we stopped at a local “houses” museum. It seems that some king a while back gave his wife this museum and moved like 40+ houses into the area. These houses were all different styles of the “older” architecture found throughout Romania. We saw a large wooden church, a house that was built partially underground, windmills, …

We got back on the bus and drove thru more of the city then arrived at lunch. Along the way, I heard a lady say “That must be an embassy since it has flags out in front”. I guess she didn’t see that it was the Romanian flag. This was another local lunch with local dancers and music. We at the full meal. Well, now the world is REALLY small. We were talking with a couple across the table. They asked where we were from Susan stated Lenoir. Matt said, my CPA partner of 25 years was from Lenoir and we almost moved to Boone. He then asked if we knew Charlie McGimsey. Heck yea. Then he said Charlie’s his brother works at SAS, yep, I know, and I

do too. Ha. Matt took a picture of us and was going to email it to Charlie.

After lunch we drove to old town and did a tour of old town, then had an hour of free time to walk the area. Susan and I stopped for a desert. Maybe this was the start of our problem. We finished and headed to the bus. Of course, the same lady that was late after the houses tour was again very late for getting back to the bus. She finally came back while the guide was out looking for her. Some people… The bus then drove us by the Palace of the Parliament. This is the largest civilian building in the world with 3000 rooms. It was started by Ceausescu during the communist era and he raised a good portion of the city to build it and the avenues surrounding it. We are told he destroyed several nice sections of the town. The bus then took us to the Sheraton, our hotel for the evening. We went to the Viking desk, picked up our keys and headed to the room. Our suitcases were already there.

I had to charge my

camera some before heading back out, then Susan and I went out to walk around the area. We saw a couple cute stores and did some shopping. I found 2 nice blouses and Susan found 3. The prices of mine where great. Susan’s prices were average. Then we got the bright idea to go to the bakery and get a pastry for dinner. Well everything looked so good, so we bought several things but of course they were all REAL SWEET. We came back to the hotel to work on the blogs and have our dinner. Oh man, eating all those sweets was NOT a good idea. We both felt terrible. Live and learn.

We finished the blogs and decided to go to bed early as we must leave for the airport at 6 am and have our luggage out by the door by 5:30 am. Tomorrow we fly back home but we don’t arrive until 10pm into Charlotte, then must drive to Lenoir. It will be a long day since we must get up early, we are 7 hours ahead and we don’t get in till late.
