Monday and Tuesday were our last two days in Krakow, Poland. For the most part, this time was spent at a very casual pace, wandering the streets of Old Town. Theres always been something on here, festivals, buskers, human statues of all varieties, free hugs, food stalls and music. On the Monday, we enjoyed a delicious lunch from a food stall, where you could basically pick anything to eat; duck, pork knuckle, dumplings, potatoes, mushrooms, sausages, vegetables etc. We picked dumplings some potatoes and wild mushrooms! Dinner that evening was at a place called Babcia Malina, traditional home style cooking, in a restaurant that felt like grandmas living room. Schnitzels for mains and a stewed pear with strawberries for dessert.
Monday was our last night in Krakow. However with our departure by train not until 10pm, the hotel staff were kind enough to store our luggage for the day after checkout. This gave us another full day to spend in Krakow. Unfortunately for me, Id spend the day limping around as a cripple. Now there are few things more irritating and aggravating than a stubbed toe. We've all done it in our dumbest moments and hated ourselves for it. Most
of the time it occurs, we scream, we cringe, we laugh with pain and move on with our lives. Not this time. It happened in our room. On an innocent trip to the bathroom, I didn't notice a peculiar extension from the wall of an inch or so. That was enough to collect my right pinky toe passing through. Disaster. The cracking sound sent shockwaves throughout Europe. The pain was not too far detached from a torn hamstring. It didn't let up. It swelled. From red, to purple to black. I wonder if its broken, or at least fractured. It looks so brutal, it makes Nat chuckle. Thongs were now the only option, and I spent the remainder of the day walking slowly and painfully around.
The attraction for today was free, and brief. A short walk to a museum, located at the former headquarters of the Nazi Gustapo in Poland. It was a sad account of the victims held and abused there, as well as chilling visit to the old prison and torture cells below ground.
As for the angry man, we encountered him before dinner on the Tuesday night, hurling crazy Polish abuse at what seemed like everyone, driving his
tour golf buggy around in a threatening fashion. The police had arrived. People gathered around, some staring, some cringing, some chuckling. Our last meal in Poland came at Zdybanka, another great dining experience. Our friendly waiter was all to happy to fill us in on the angry man. Story has it, there are many rival tour groups in Krakow, offering to take tourists around in golf buggies on a city tour. Mr Angry, had picked up two customers, and was driving by rival turf. A rival tour guide called out, asking him to stop so they could discuss something. Rather than that, Mr Angry lined him up, and pressed the foot to the accelerator, trying to run him over! Obviously, this isn't really wise or possible in a golf buggy. This angered Mr Angry. Worse, his customers now somewhere between weirded out and terrified, disembarked his hell mobile, choosing not to continue his professional tour or pay the man. For hours, Mr Angry descended into madness abusing everyone, whilst police tried to sedate the beast.
After our delicious meal, we collected our luggage, and headed for the train station. We spent our remaining Polish Zloty on some snacks and climbed aboard
Gustapo HQ Prison Cell
In Krakow. Cells used for torture and interrogations under the Gustapo HQ base in Krakow. Now a museum our 10.01pm train to Budapest. Rather than the hellish seats of our last overnight train, we had opted for a private sleeper cabin this time. We were relieved to find a comfortable and cosy room for our ride. It was noisy, but made for a fun unique adventure.
