Me!
How could I not?! Hello, hello
Poland was an unexpected surprise in all respects. The first few days we were hosted by a couch surfing couple who kept us entertained with cuisine, tales of Japan, and midnight tours of the city - beautiful and full of rich and passionate history.
Of course, our next stop in Poland was to be reunited with some friends we had made on the beach at lake Baikal in Siberia. Ewa picked us up from the train and we were straight to one of the most classy and seductive apartments I have seen in years! I couldn't get over the large double bed and real down quilts... but I did manage to pull myself out of bed to see the city and explore the outskirts with Ewa.
Only a day after our arrival, the Alicja & Maciek came up to join us for a weekend reunion and of course, it was a great time had by all. We pulled out the local spirits and went from Milkbar (local student eating halls) to pubs and all around town. Then we were off south with Alicja & Maciek to check out their corner of Poland - and what a
crazy adventure that was. We started our town exploring by following an official dwarf map showing all the dwarf statutes hidden around town. Of course, yet again we were met with such open hospitality that it tugs at my heart. We spent days wandering the town and catching up with friends. We relaxed and toured the town on bikes, hit the gym, and were constantly fed by Alicja's mother.
In the end, we overstayed our planned Poland leg on account of our friends and trying to catch an old buddy of mine who happened to be in a local fight. Yep - to feed my love for Poland, some local muay thai captured my attention and I was able to properly introduce John to the sport! Finally, we reluctantly moved on - planning to hike over the mountains into Slovakia, but were met with hoards of snow and bitter, biting cold... even the duck tape in my shoes couldn't keep it out, so we abandoned our plans after a night tenting in low lying mountains and opted for a bus that dumped us in a winter wonderland to plod across the boarder and hope our left over currency conversion
Amazing statues...
can you see across the street?! was enough to get us into a city in Slovakia...
More soon...
