21-08-08 Patient Poles and the long walk

We got a late start this morning catching up on a big day yesterday. We went to Kuznice a nearby town - taking the local bus. This is a interesting system - all old Mercedes bus, the quing system is open to interpretation, and your free to get as many people in the bus as you feel comfortable, rather then leave anyone behind. We arrived at Kuznice we found another queue for the cable car, everyone was waiting patiently for the car to take us 1000 m up to the peak which is on the border between PL and SK, unfortunately one of the cable cars wasn’t working so it looked like the wait would be 2 hrs… So we decided to walk up a mountain instead - Mt Giewont, which is an imposing site over Zakopane, it all ir was a 7 hr hike, we really didn’t bring the righr kit for this sort of walking, it was nice to see the locals were pretty laid back about there walking as well, they just strolled up in the same clothes they’d wear in the pub - no problems. It is difficult not to notice the difference in womens fashion in Eastern Euope, I would have to say that the women here are pretty presentable, but as Jen rightly points out, they really don’t where a lot of clothing, or appear more than a little slutty - here in Zakopane it is not so noticeable, but you would never see women dressed the same way in the Cowgate in Edinburgh and definitely not on top of Ben Nevis, Mind you there was a pub halfway up the mountain which was extremely popular with the locals, this all helps explain the popularity of this place.

It was about 28 degrees today, and dead still and clear a nice day for a walk. We are going to see if we can stay on here one more night, will see how we get on tomorrow. All in all we are very impressed by this place, it would be nice to comeback in the winter some time….
