With my time going so fast I thought it would be a good idea to do some final travelling before I left. German Wings is a German airline that has an offer called blind booking. What you do is pick a city theme, ex: East Europe, Party Europe or Culture. You pay only 40 € and the website randomly chooses a roundtrip ticket to one of the 10 different cities in the theme you choose. I had been thinking about doing it for a while and finally set a date to go with 3 other friends. We choose the East Europe theme and got a flight to Krakow, Poland. This was pretty lucky because one of my friends can speak fluent Polish. May 1st is a holiday so we decided that it was a good weekend to go.

The flight was leaving from the Cologne/Bonn airport at around 10am. Since Friday was a holiday the buses don’t run as often so it was a bit difficult for me to get to the airport but I made it without too much issue. The flight was only about 2 hours and we arrived in the town of Katowice which is about 30

kilometres from Krakow. We figured we could find our way no problem to Krakow but found out it was not that easy. We finally settled on a bus to the train station in Katowice and a train to Krakow. The train ride ended up taking about 2 hours which we didn’t really expect but it was fun to see some of Poland. Once we pulled into the train station my friend Eva had friends waiting to show us to our hostel. We dropped our bags off at the hostel which had a great central location and was about a 2 minute walk from the main Krakow square. That afternoon we were shown around the city by Eva’s friends and even given a little history of all the building we saw. After the tour of the main sights we got dinner recommendations and went to an authentic polish restaurant. I had perogies, which are pasta filled with meat and cabbage and then fried. I am sure they were absolutely terrible for me but they tasted delicious. The great thing about Krakow is that everything is relatively cheap. They still have their own currency and the conversion rate from Euro was really

good.

The next morning and went and saw the main church of Krakow. We went up the tower and saw great views of the city. After exploring the church and a few sites around the main square we met up with Eva’s friends so they could show us around the old Jewish courtiers. The area has quite a few synagogue but the Jewish population has left the area after WWII. It now is a very trendy part of the city with bars and cafés. We even made a visit to the actual factory from “Shindler’s List”. After another amazing dinner we headed to a bar in the old Jewish courtiers that Eva’s friends liked. It was a very cool place with wardrobe closets as doorways. It felt very “Chronicles of Narnia”. We had a great time and it was funny to think at our table during the night English, German and Polish was spoken. Our polish friends recommended a shot called white dog, it was Raspberry syrup, vodka and Tabasco sauce, and was surprisingly good. We ended the evening by thanking Eva’s friends for being wonderful hosts while we visited their city.

On Sunday we had our flight

back to Germany and took a shuttle bus straight to the airport to cut down on the travel time and make our lives easier. We arrived back tired but happy from a really great weekend in Poland. It really was a country I have never thought about visiting but have to say it is one I wouldn’t mind seeing again.
