One of Four Soviet Statues on the Green Bridge

Installed in the early 1950s, are they a reminder of the ugliness of Soviet culture? Are they genuine works of art?
Left the hotel at 09h00, walking across the Green Bridge to view the Soviet statues left as a reminder of what was and then continued down Vilnius Gatvė to the main Tourist Information Centre and the Town Hall. City doesn't appear to be as vibrant as Riga nor even Tallin.

Then continued on to the Republic of Užupis where I studied its constitution:

     • Everyone has the right to live by the River Vilnelė, while the River Vilnelė has the right to flow by everyone.
     • Everyone has the right to hot water, heating in winter and a tiled roof.
     • Everyone has the right to die, but it is not a duty.
     • Everyone has the right to make mistakes.
     • Everyone has the right to individuality.
     • Everyone has the right to love.
     • Everyone has the right to be not loved, but not necessarily.
     • Everyone has the right not to be distinguished and famous.
     • Everyone has the right to be idle.
     • Everyone has the right to love and take care of a cat.
     • Everyone has the right to look after a dog till one or the other dies.
     • A dog has the right to be a dog.
     • A cat is not obliged

     • Everyone has the right to be in doubt, but this is not a duty.
     • Everyone has the right to be happy.
     • Everyone has the right to be unhappy.
     • Everyone has the right to be silent.
     • Everyone has the right to have faith.
     • No one has the right to violence.
     • Everyone has the right to realize his negligibility and magnificence.

    rights.
     • Everyone has the right to not be afraid.
     • Do not defeat.
     • Do not fight back.
     • Do not surrender.

I then decided it was my right to have a break, celebrating with a beer and omelette!

Then, I was off to Gediminas Castle where the river path was closed as was the path to the castle, but I followed it anyway! Finally, it was the Old Town ...

Let the photos tell the story ...

Having been made an offer I couldn't refuse, I left 30 years of (office) work behind and now 'work' outdoors. As Nehru so neatly said, we live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. Thus, with eyes open and asking questions, I hope to continue learning through experience and travel, as these are as education in themselves. Happy reading - I shall be happy travelling ... c",) ... full info

The Bernadine Church was used as a barracks by Russian troops whilst Napoleon liked St Anne's so much and "wanted to take it back to Paris in the palm of his hands" that his troops used it as a barracks on their way to Moscow in 1812

Built on the site of a pagan temple, the Soviet regime was going to use the building as a tractor factory but decided to turn it into an art gallery instead. Some of the pictures still hang there.

St. Casimir's Church

The only church with a crown on its dome - St Casimir was a king. Napoleon used the church as a granary and the Soviets used it as a Museum of Atheism. St. Casimir is shown as having three hands as the artist wanted to paint the most perfect picture and, every time he painted out his original attempt, it would come back!
