Looks like a nice day? Sun out, so can not be to cold.. -13 deg when this photo taken :)
So it has been over two months now living here in Vilnius and time to write what we have been up to for this time.
Firstly we are already into our second apartment, the first place we were staying was with an Lithuanian guy who had a contract until May or something which was perfect but he had lost his job a few weeks back along with now 16% of the nation, exactly one year ago it was at 4% unemployment, hard times here at the moment. But anyway we had no worries about finding a new place and this time we are living by ourselves only a couple minute walk from Diana’s uni so it is perfect. We have had our one year anniversary on the 28th October, out for dinner and a fun day it was.
Other bad news along the way, Dixy our first hamster has died but we have another hamster now, Karma. (Interesting name?) She is still tiny as you can see from the pictures but can still make a hell of a noise at 2am in the morning, when we go to bed the disco Karma is banished to the bathroom two doors
away from us every night. I never realised how much noise a hamster could make.
Couchsurfing events here is going on all the time and normally we all meet for a few beers once or twice a week, show the people around the city also. Even I have showed several people around the city now! Well it is not a big city Vilnius and can be easily walked around in five hours or so. The old town is by far the best place here as everything turns into ex soviet grey buildings the further you head out of the city centre so best to stay here.
We have also been doing as much culture experiences as well, sneaking into concerts haha Our good friend is part of a choir and one night they were performing on TV along with international acts of all sorts from Europe but it was bloody expensive so the next thing we knew we were both part of the choir and back stage we were until we pounced on a couple of seats. The choir was amazing also, around fifty group members wearing traditional clothing singing and dancing away but I had no idea
what they were singing about but Diana said it was great, it still sounded good!
I have started my uni also a week ago and Diana is flying along with her studies, flat out trying to get everything done before we go to Sweden for Christmas, A WHITE CHRISTMAS we hope. Well I guess since on the weather, well, have seen the sun once since here and even took a photo to prove it, and that’s pretty much it. We have had a good snowfall once which I was sooo excited about running around like a kid but on an average day it hovers around -7 to -2 deg but today was -13 deg max and staying for quite awhile the news said. Back to studies, the other reasons for Diana so flat out at the moment is she is trying to sort out a project for India, Australia and Lithuania comparing self-esteem but as always India is causing a headache! Wrote to many universities in Delhi but nothing back as yet so we are just going to turn up and ask students to fill in a form. Students in Australian, be aware, you’re also in our sights!
Other news, I am playing basketball now :) Since basketball is religion here everyone is good no matter how small, tall, fat or skinny everyone has game so I bring my half Aussie rules half basketball game along and get along fine. Also Swine flu has hit here also and my god was it a panic a couple of weeks ago! I guess it is following the winters around since I was back home in July and it was all over the news but didn’t realise how big it was here. The streets were dead in a capital city, everyone had the flu at one stage 30% and that is only people who went to the doctors and not people sitting at home. We were lucky enough not to get sick also as Diana’s uni was closed, schools etc due to that.
And a little bit of advice, if going to India DO NOT apply for your tourist visa in Stockholm! What a bloody nightmare that is (still going on and day 36) but if anyone will like to have a little read of what is going on we will put a link below and that is
a SHORT SUMMARY of what has happened so far as we were asking for some help. I must say I am not too fond of India people since my last trip but Diana is already sick of them and not even been there :)
We got a visit from a Tassie girl two weeks ago:) It was great to have Erin come here and visit, thanks for coming over Erin. Even though we were all freezing and Diana and I were trying to deal with the above problem we still had a great time eating way to much stuff! But now she is back in the warm Tassie sunshine but we hope she heads back to London next year so we can return the visit :)
We hope everyone was a safe and wonderful Christmas! Drink and eat way too much!
