Today was a bit of a travel day. But the good news was that the travel day only started at 11:45 so we had most of the morning free. MK, Jen and I decided to head off to the Coffee House for breakfast, where I had the most delicious bowl of porridge. The only hitch in the plan was the fact that we had to walk past 3 of the stores to find one that was open. Apparently they all only open at 9am - not sure what all the office workers who want coffee before work do.
After our delicious breakfast we headed off to walk around the old town for a little while. This turned out to be a slightly expensive morning as I bought a lovely amber necklace and matching set of earrings for a large sum of money, and then followed that up with a lovely blue scarf. MK was accosted by a delightful women on the street who was selling hats and who handed her a gorgeous pink and purple hat that totally matched all the clothes that she was wearing. It was such a perfect match ( and because the weather had been so
cold recently) MK just had to buy it. The had to show MK how to put the hat on properly and then came running down the street after us as she realised that she had the hat on backwards. Totally worth the purchase just for the entertainment value of the transaction.
So after spending all of our money in the morning, we hopped on a bus at the bus station of Riga and headed off for Lithuania and the town of Klaepeida. The bus ride seemed really reallly really long and boring. I am not sure why todays bus ride was so bad, but it just was. However it was livened up a little bit by the fact that the bus had wireless access again, so I managed to jot off a quick email before I got too car sick. The countryside that we passed through was really quite lovely, however it could have been the countryside in many places around the world. It especially looked like certain parts of England. I actually saw a local peasant lady in the fields milking her cow, and I also saw a couple of storks in the fields. I guess one of
the benefits of getting bus sick is the fact that you can't read on the bus so you get to look out the windows the whole time and see what is passing you by.
We arrived into Klaipeda at about 5:30pm and trudged off (with our packs on our backs) to find our hotel. And I have to say that our hotel for the night (Litinterp Hotel) is just lovely. MK and I are sharing a gorgeous little room that has its own sitting room area, complete with a beer fridge. Our first order of business upon arrival into town was to change some money over. Because my ATM card seems to have stopped working (I will be contacting the bank as soon as I find internet access again) I had to find a currency exchange so that I could change some Euros over. The first currency exchange that we came to was closed so Andy (our tour guide) and I cruised off to find another one. The only one that we found was located in a casino. It was quite an experience wandering through a casino in Klaipeda looking for the exchange booth. 😊
After safely sourcing
some money we went for a little walk around the town. There really isn't all that much to say about Klaipeda. It certainly isn't the architectural capital of the world. However we did have a lovely dinner in a local restaurant called the Cili Kaimas. This seems to be a bit of a chain in the Baltics as we had dinner last night at Cili Pica. We ate so much at dinner that we had to go for a walk afterwards to let it settle a little bit. Luckily it doesn't get dark here until about 10:30pm at the moment so we headed off to the Statue Park to take a look at the artworks.
Tomorrow we are off for a trip to look at the Curonian Spit.
