Day 10
Chianti ?
I know I’m late; gee whiz. I feel like my status reports are due and Patti, Val and Carryl are watching me over my cubicle.
So today I skip the breakfast routine. Read yesterdays it was the same.
All right we have talked about seeing more castles; so Kirsten takes off out of Gaiole going south. She tells me to find where the Brolio Castle is located. I haven’t even got my maps unfolded and she’s already making turns onto roads that I’ve haven’t seen. Finally I spot the road we’re on and where the castle is on the map.
Off in the far distance we see this majestic castle. Kirsten say’s that’s it. It is quite impressive I must say. We wind up and down 3 – 4 more roads and we’re there. Well we’re at the base of the mountain where the castle is up top. Kirsten throws it into first gear and roars past the parking area and tourist getting off their bus beginning the trek up the mountain. We take the service road to the top, and yea she finds a parking spot. Me, I’m hiding under the
passage seat. The door slams and I hear are you coming honey. Is it safe, Kirsten just laughs as she’s walking toward the ticket office.
By the time I catch up she has the tickets and were walking through the main entrance. We tour the castle, the private cathedral, the crypt and the gardens. We could see Siena from the castle garden. The original owners were monks and they swapped the area with some guy. He then lost it to some Sienna guy who then lost it to some Florence guy. You get it…. back and forth and back and forth. Well it finally ended up in the hands of Baron Bettino Ricasoli, one of the original owners from way back.
This is the guy who created Chianti Classico….. I’m not kidding he’s the one. Check him out on WIKIPEDIA if you don’t believe me.
So you know what I’m doing I’m sure the portal is here somewhere. I’m running all over this place. No portal. Damn! I though for sure I had found it. As were walking out of the castle the folks on the bus are just getting up to the ticket office. Man they
look whipped. Kirsten looks at me and says glad I drove up now aren’t you. Yea!
We head down the mountain and Kirsten tell me were going to the tasting room. That’s it… where else would you put the portal but in the tasting room. We go in and it’s over the top, they greet us and Kirsten whips out our castle tickets and we get the royal treatment. Still not portal, I just keep looking.
After a buying a couple bottles of wine and some art for the house Kirsten and I are back in the car.
For a treat I tell Kirsten we are very close to Monte San Savino. This is where Kirsten and I first visited over 15 years ago. In addition this is where we spent our honeymoon. So we drove for less that 30 minutes and we were there. Yea, major flash backs from when we where there.
The first time we were here we got into trouble for parking in the area where market setup. I had to pay a fine I thought they were going to really put me in a dungeon. Well it was a $15 fine
but I have a photo of the young officer. Well while we were sitting at the café guess who walks up. Yep the officer; just older like us.
We sat and had our picnic over looking the valley and reminiscing the last 15 years.
From there we road back to our apartment and had a pizza from the pizzeria later that night.
