Lucca Orto Botanico
Near the waterlily pond 12th October 2013
The forecast for today was for a cool morning followed by heavy rain in the afternoon, so we decided to head off to the supermarket and get some supplies before the weather changed. By the time we returned home and had lunch the weather had improved - weather forecasting is a dodgy business anywhere in the world - so we walked to the botanic gardens (Orto Botanico) and enjoyed a pleasant stroll through the gardens in glorious sunshine.
We went to the tourist office to get some bus timetable information then took a walk along the wall to the bus terminal. Naturally the office was closed - it was after 5pm. We then headed towards home and as we passed a pasticceria, we saw delicious home made pies (tortes) in the window. A unanimous decision was made to forget about the morning supermarket purchases and to buy a spinach pie for dinner. Next stop was a clothing store which had some very attractive winter coats in the window. We popped in for a quick look and Caroline came out with a stylish new coat - a very good buy and just the thing for the expected
Lucca Cento Storico
Looking out over the walls late afternoon colder weather in Germany next month!
Back home, made a salad, poured some wine and put our spinach pie in the oven. We shared the pie - quite a big slice each - and took a first bite - it was perfect except that it was very sweet! We quickly realised that this was some sort of dessert pie. We looked on the internet - what else could one do? - and found that this is a special sweet spinach torte very much favoured in the Tuscan region. It didn't really go with a big salad drizzled with plenty of olive oil & balsamic but we soldiered on. Followed up with some olives and crisps - on the whole a beautifully balanced meal. We live & learn!
