Florence
Ponte VecchioFirenze day today. All up early and on the 9.30am train - a magnificent effort made slightly easier by the usual lateness of the train.
We planned to walk to as many of the famous sights as possible and to meet up with Mon's sister Steph who is staying in Florence for a few days. We walked to the Ponte Vecchio, took multiple photos, then decided that coffee and cake was needed to fortify us for the day ahead. We strolled into a cafe adjacent to the bridge and enjoyed a pleasant coffee break. We then went to pay the bill for 6 coffees and 6 different cakes and were presented with a bill for 65 euros!! If the owners of this place were wearing masks and carrying guns, we would have at least known what they were up to, but they were all disguised as pleasant Italian cafe operators. They had added a 2 euro charge to each (already overpriced) item because we sat at a table. Italian cafes usually charge extra if you sit down, but not on every item. Enjoying morning tea in Cafe "Rip-off" paid up and spent the rest of the day remembering our delicious morning coffee.
We met up with Steph and walked to the Duomo , then the Uffizi museum, then on to the many magnificent squares filled with the statues and monuments that make Florence famous. We picked up some tasty (and cheap!!) sandwiches on our way up to the Piazzale Michelangiolo where we had a fabulous view over the city.
Back home via a (late again) train, followed by delicious pizza (again) and delicious gelato (again)!
It was a busy but enjoyable day and great to meet up with Steph again. Sadly, we said farewell to Mon who was staying overnight with Steph in Florence - we are heading off to Torri del Bonaco in the morning. Holidays with our much loved Scottish clan always go so quickly.
