this was wed. night, they are so great So, florence was great. I really like the city and wish i had more time to spend there. Most of our time was spent walking from museum to museum. Dont get me wrong, i enjoy a good painting of Madonna and Child, but after so many, they start to look the same. Im just glad we actually got to see some art work instead of some old buildings. Thursday night we went out to our chinese restaurant with our friends from interlaken who stopped in rome. They are so great. Plus, the meal was awesome. The next morning we took the train to florence. It was a short ride; less than 2 hours. The hotel we stayed at was right outside the train station. We took our bags to the hotel and then began the tours. We went to some library, a church, and then an art exhibit. It was great because i got to see some of the paintings we studied last semester in art history. We were all so tired so we went to the hotel, got our rooms and crashed. That night Laura, Sarah, and I went out to grab something to eat. I think we went into
old library
i love the ceiling, beautiful carved wood every possible pizzeria that florence offers; we finally settled on one, but i was really craving some gelato (ofcourse). We also hit about a hundred places before we actually got some. It was pretty expensive, but i really liked it. When we first got to florence, it seemed so busy, so many people out shopping and such, but that was not the case at night. We ended up getting a little lost trying to get back to the hotel. We stopped in this gelato place and the guy there was very friendly. He even gave us a map, showed us how to get back to a hotel, not the hotel we were looking for, but nevertheless, it was a nice gesture. He even said "welcome to florence." I feel like its harder to find that sort of hospitality here in rome. We did find our way back though when a guy who handed us a flyer for a club pointed us in the right direction. Then we actually ended up going to that club later that night and talked with the flyer guy. His name was lorenzo and he was very nice. Looks just like Pete Townshend from the Who.
We told him that and he was a little embarrassed. Then we met some of his friends and just sat and talked for awhile and headed back to the hotel. We got breakfast for free at the hotel. It was like a buffet, so i loaded up. It was really good. Saturday we went to sienna. I love this town, very cute. It had the cutest piazza; little kids were all around and people were just sitting enjoying the beautiful day. The town really caters to the tourists. Lots of great shopping, really clean. Ofcourse we went to some museums and such. We got to walk to the top of this tower and got an amazing view of the town and the tuscan region. That night back in florence we met up with lorenzo and went to a pizzeria with his friend raul. I had this amazing pizza with ricotta and spinach. Absolutely delicious. Then we walked to this piazza that has an amazing view of the city. Then back to the hotel. That morning i had another delicious, huge breakfast, plus a took some food for later. Hey, im a student on a budget. Then we did some more
touring. More churches, more musuems. Im sorry im not more specific on our visits, but after so many its difficult to distinguish one from the other. We got to go inside the baptistry, and we saw the tombs of galileo, brunileschi, machiavelli, michalangelo, fake tomb of dante (the real one is in ravena), and we got to see the dromo. We did not however, get to see the David. It was not on the schedule and we did not have the time during our free time. So, florence was great, but the train ride back...not so great. So we get on the train and suddenly...chaos. People are in our seats. So we are all in this extremely narrow aisle with all our bags, blocking people. Well, our tickets were for the previous month, so we didnt have reserved seats. After some time trying to get out of this mess, we just sat on the floor for the ride home. Oh well, atleast it was less than 2 hours. Well, this week we have an italian exam and the architecture midterm, yeah that one should be interesting. Atleast we get a break this weekend. No side trips planned, just lots and
lots of sleeping.
