Numana to Misano Adriatico
4th June to 11th June 2012
Monday 4th June 2012
Head off in nice weather but the further north we go the worse it gets so decided to go inland to Urbino rather than the beaches. Find the only campsite just out of town – ‘Camping Pineta’. Bloody hell - €38 a night and only 4amps – that won’t even run the oil heater and Tom has packed up the doona way down into the bowels of the camper. So I’m cold and not happy. It now has started to rain very lightly, so on with wet weather gear, and on the scooter into town.
What a beautiful place. We find the tourist information office and get map and info on Duomo. Off to see Rapphael’s home - where he grew up – very interesting and quite a lot of rooms and you can see how it is built – which Tom found most interesting.
We walked around the wall of the town – a beautiful view. The hills are all cultivated and then there are the mountains – about 30kms away.
We head back down
into the town.
In the back streets, we see a young girl opening up the bar – called ‘The Bosom Bar’ so in we go for a drink. Have a great chat to her and a friend who speaks a little English. They tell us of a good restaurant and we head to there for dinner. Very good.
It was not dark yet and not raining so we head back to the camper.
But as heater not working due to only being 4amps, Tom has put on 2 t-shirts and I have on track pants, nightie, T-shirt, long sleeved thermal and still was cold under sheet, green waffle blanket and pink blanket (could have been worse Tom says – it could have snowed - haha).

Wake up to a sunny day and get organised to go back to Urbino, but Tom suggests that as we have good weather, we go to Urbania. Off on scooter – 22km away. A nice ride to Urbania and the scenery is beautiful. We find the tourist office and they are very organised with a folder for tourists.
We go to the Museum,
the language school and ask a few questions about doing school there, then wander, have lunch and then find a camper rest spot for tomorrow.
Then back onto scooter to Urbino to go through the Ducale Palazzo – the best preserved renaissance castle in Italy – somewhat dear to go through but worth it. The craftsmanship in the inlay of the wooden doors and trunks is unbelievable. A lot is done in perspective with a vanishing point. Tom says that they are as good as any drawing done by draftsmen that he has seen and these are in wood and done in the 1500’s or even earlier.
We find a small supermarket but it doesn’t open til 4.30pm so we have a drink at the bar and wait til it opens.
Shopping and back home.

I went to pay for the campsite for 2 nights and the guy tells me it is €45 per night. I tell him ‘no’ he told me it was €38 per night, then he says that the camper was larger, but OK. The camper is not as large as some we have seen around.
I think he was trying to jib us. Next time I will get them to write it down. Even another camper person thought the price was a bit steep for what we got compared to other campsites. The showers and toilets were not so clean either.
Off we go to Urbania. We went and saw the bodies that are naturally mummified from the 1500’s held in the ‘Church of the Dead’ (Chiesa dei Morti)– really interesting – the bodies of the poor people used to be buried in the ground – no coffin. The type of mould present in the ground absorbed moisture from the corpses leading to the complete desiccation of the bodies. The guide in the church could speak good English and he was very enthusiastic.
We left then and headed towards the beaches. We found one ‘Camping Misano’ in Misano Adriatico, amongst the thousands along the coast. We are south of Rimini – about 70kms. We will stay here for a few days.

Go for a bicycle ride and find the large supermarket ‘Conads’. The bottled water is very cheap - we buy 6 x 1.5ltr water
€1.50. Home for a swim.
Find a seafood restaurant for dinner. Very nice.
Back to motorhome –it’s 10pm. A relaxing day.
Friday 8
th June 2012.
Tom went for a long flat bicycle ride.
Found out that the Superbike race is on this Sunday. So we text our good friend Wazza and yes his son Mark is there but not racing. We decide to go on Sunday.
Saturday 9
th June 2012.
Up early and off to the track, about 3kms away and buy tickets at €60 each.
Then off on scooter to San Marino. This town is perched on a spur out crop some 100 metres above the plains – so very steep walking. This is a separate Republic from the rest of Italy of 61 sq kms. It is the oldest Republic in the world.
We visit the 1
st and 2
nd towers of the castle – well worth it for view. The second tower also had in it the Museum of Arms – hundreds of old rifles, pistols, swords, axes etc.
So we meander around the town – full of tourist shops so we head to
6.6.12 - Urbania - Church of the Dead -Mummies
This is a scanned postcard as you could not take photos inside. car park.
On scooter and go as quick as we can as it is starting to lightly rain. We head back the way we came but missed one turn off – not too bad – and get back just in time before it really starts to rain.
Sunday 10
th June 2012.
Up and at 9am we head off by foot to the race track. We follow the other walkers.
We buy some T-shirts for souvenirs. We had dressed for rain – but like the weather bureau at home, not very accurate. We used the umbrellas to shade us as it turned out very hot.
At the end of the main race, we received a reply text from Mark that he is now free, so we meet up with him and he takes us into the pit area and we meet his manageress. Had a great day.
So we wander home and find there camped opposite us is a young couple with a trailer and race bike. We find out that he will be racing on Monday.
While they were out for dinner it started to rain, so Tom brings in their
chairs and puts them under our awning to keep dry. I had already gone to bed, pooped out.
Monday 11
th June 2012.
Tom gets up and finds a note and a bottle of beer in an Italian beer holder, saying ‘thank you’ for bringing in the chairs – actually one of them was a camp bed and they would not have had anything to sleep on if they had gotten wet.
So we had a chat – and they knew of Mark. It cost them €500 to enter the race day. Tom helps load the bike into trailer while Gaye chats to girl. Lovely couple.
We then head off on the scooter to the Castle at Gradara as recommended to us by Vanessa, Marks manager. Well worth the ride. €5 each for entry to get into the castle and go along the wall. Well presented and preserved and lots of information in English.
Had lunch. Back home on scooter.
Took a walk, and then packed up van for leaving tomorrow.
