Friday morning, we departed the Splendid Hotel for a ride to Lake Como, a place frequented by the very rich and very famous. He we find the homes of George Clooney, Bridget Bardot, and many others whose fame and fortune far outweighs the rest of us.
Today the optional tour was a boat ride around the lake to see where the other half lives. Cathy and I have done that several times, so we chose to stay in town and visit the churches and the shops.
Como is famous for silk and many of the shops featured local silk clothes such as ties, scarves, shirts and suits. Many bore the names of famous designers. We were able to buy some ties, scarves and some smaller items for those we left at home.
We perambulated all around the squares, enjoyed a favorite gelato, and just marveled at all there was to see. We visited one old church and were greeted by two high school students who were offering to provide free tours of the church as part of their history class.
The spoke good English and were well versed in the ins and outs of the church. Since
this was the oldest church in Como there was much to see and learn, and our tour guides answered questions and provided local flavor. It was an informative and educational visit.
Later that afternoon we met up with the rest of the Trafalgar family for the ride back to the Splendid Hotel and more down time. Many of the group found their way back to the pool for a refreshing dip and another beer!
Dinner tonight was a special treat. We left the hotel by boat and crossed to a private island still owned by the Borromeo family. In the 1800’s this island was a favorite play spot for the young prince Borromeo. He loved to pretend he was a Pirate and so in honor of the prince, the family later converted the watch tower into a restaurant devoted to Pirate lore.
Since we were on an island, and in a watch tower, we had an amazing view of the lake and all the surrounding Alps. The sun came to set right on the western shore of the lake providing many photo opportunities, all of which I captured on my memory card for future enjoyment.
Again,
dinner was amazing with a starter of fish or veal, followed by risotto with saffron and a main course of turkey or lake trout. All of which was well prepared beautifully presented and very delicious. Custard completed the meal. As usual wine a plenty flowed from beautiful ceramic pitchers.
By the time dinner ended we were a little drunk to say the least. We headed back to the boat for the raucous ride back to the hotel. There was loud music, singing and laughing all the way back to the Splendid.
Cathy and I were beat, so it was back to bed to get ready for the early departure and the city of Pisa and on to Florence.
