Drive along the Italian Riviera

Friday 1st October 2010

Rain in the air and time to move along the coast taking the motorway through the mountainous terrain to Sanremo ( the city of flowers ) on the section of the Riviera the Italians call the Riviera dei Fiori.
The site here is by the sea and with lots of facilities including a pool, Jacuzzi, sun terrace, small private beach, table tennis and free wifi. As the forecast for the following week is good we book in for 7 nights at a discounted rate. As an added bonus we discover that there is a good supermarket 100m away and the local bus passes right outside - sorted.

Saturday 2nd October 2010

A chill out day making use of the site facilities and the boys improving their ping pong technique
Sunday 3rd October 2010
Sanremo has a new cycle / walking path that has been constructed on the old coastal railway route and today we take the 2km walk into the town along it to visit a slow food festival being held in the centre. We take the opportunity to taste as many of the specialities on offer which include cheese, olives, olive oil, sausages, preserved meats, jams, breads etc and buy some delicious chestnut stuffed roast pork to take home for lunch along with a garlic tapenade and onion focaccia.
After lunch its free time so Max heads to the sun terrace and the boys to their gadgets whilst I ‘rest my eyes’.

Monday 4th & Tuesday 5th October 2010

Full on school days and catch up on domestics with a little chilling and table tennis thrown in.

Wednesday 6th October 2010

We catch the local bus into Sanremo and explore the town. The historic town centre is built around the hill where a castle used to stand this was built by the local nobility along with a walled village called La Pigna to protect the town from Saracen raids. This largely remains and it was interesting to wander around the narrow streets which appear to be in elegant decay.
The obligatory visit to the local market followed with the boys surprised to see the heads and full swords of sword fish from which steaks were being cut.
Lunch at McDonalds! And back to site for a swim and chill.

Thursday 7th October 2010

Final day on site with maths and domestics in the morning and a chance to catch up with the blog. After lunch the sun and clear blue sky temps us to the pool and sun terrace once again and with temperatures in the low/mid 20’s we’ve no complaints.

Long time, no blog comment!!
Hello all, hope you're still all having a great time. We are still missing you - and we are losing yet another Year 5. Yes, leon Moonie has moved to Upper Cumberworth so left today. We are down to 23 children in Year 5 now. Hey ho!! The weather here today was misty but warm - 17 degrees, but not warm enough to be out in our t-shirts like Thing 1 and Thing 2. I saw Ethan coming out of the Sports Centre on Monday night as I was going to play badminton. He had just been for his trampoline lesson. Year 2 had a visit from Skelmanthorpe Fire Crew today as part of their work in History and Science. We had a huge fire engine in the car park. Glad to hear that you're keeping up with your Maths work. 7x8??? It's my favourite sum, isn't it, Jack. take care, Love Mrs Rutter x
