So I just arrived in Rome today!!! I got to meet everyone at the gate before we got on the plane, they all seem pretty nice so no worries yet! Everyone was just really awake and hyper and so I probably seemed anti-social considering I was exhausted and didn’t really make an effort to meet anyone at first. The 8 ½ hour plane ride wasn’t that bad, food was awful but I slept for most of it. They said they were going to show a movie and I very well may have slept right through that beginning to end because the only thing I saw on the tv was this woman showing people how to exercise while sitting down.
After we got to Rome, we had to wait about an hour for a couple people who lost their baggage. We took a mini bus tour of Rome with narration provided by Renzi himself. We finally got to the hotel, which is a lot different than American hotels. It’s very small, but cute. They have a tv downstairs because I’m pretty sure you have to pay for tv in your room and they have a computer that people get on
the internet I guess. You have to pay for everything in this hotel, including internet (it’s 5 euro for 2 hours per person, which is why I probably won’t be able to get on skype until Florence probably. Finally got my phone figured out! Started calling the parents and didn’t even think about what time it was, luckily it was just 8am and not like 3am. It still hasn’t hit me yet that this isn’t a vacation and that I’m actually living here for 4 months.
We took a little walking tour of Rome after we got to nap and shower and clean up. We went to the Pantheon and a couple churches (including the one that Professor Renzi married his wife in). (pictures below). We got to see the famous fountain of…that’s shown in a bunch of famous movies (i.e. Roman Holiday). This one girl wanted a picture with one of the gladiator romans that were there just for tourists but didn’t realize she’d have to pay a couple $$ for it so the Roman is chasing this girl and then this gypsy starts chasing him. Well he got his $$, or should I say the gypsy did
because he gave it straight to her. I did think more people would speak English but it’s not a problem…yet. We ate dinner at this little restaurant that I guess opened just for us after being closed for the summer. They served a salad, pasta with bacon, and chicken with spinach and then gelato and lots and lots of red wine that actually didn’t taste that bad.
I’ve only been here one day and I’m absolutely in love with the culture! I do love Rome but I can’t wait to see Forence, Rome is extremely touristy and nobody knows where they’re going. I don’t know much about religion so that’s a pain but I guess I’ll know all there is by the time I get back. We start our Italian lang. classes tomorrow so hopefully that’ll help with the basics at least. We’re visiting the Colosseum tomorrow. Kind of missing home already though especially because I’m in the mindset that this is just a week vacation. Oh well, can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!!!
