Day 2 : Saturday 7 September : Rome and the Colosseum Off on our first real adventure. Graham’s leading the way. First stop (one of many, as it appears all roads lead to) Piazza Navona. Onto the Pantheon (free), a former Rome temple built in 125AD. The place is alive with so many people. Its magnificent inside and has a hole in its roof (intentionally). Onto Piazza Venezia and the monument (free) (Alter of the Fatherland). This is huge and you get a good view of some of the archaeological sites that are around, including the Colosseum, Teatro Marcello and Trajan’s Market. Walked over to Trajan’s Market to have a better look and then wandered on to find Mercato Monti, so wasn’t worth it, but an interesting part of town with the BEST pizza ever €13…so crisp and Ella loved the potato pizza.
A very long walk home with Gelato to break it up (€10) and via Trevi Fountain (OMG the crowds were so thick you couldn’t see it, so we didn’t try). Home for a rest until evening time when we do the walking tour of the Colosseum. $550AUD.
For our tour ‘The Roman Guy’, we met

Piazza Navona at Piazza Venezia and did a tour around and through the Piazza Campidoglio (Hilltop Square) and then to the Roman Forum and onto the Colosseum. The guide was extremely informative and we learned a lot about the history. Colosseum was a little of a let down because we were rushed through and they refused to turn the lights on because they wanted to show a film. Poor form, but you got a good feel of the place. Magnificent.
Bought our bus tickets (€1.50 pp) ready for tomorrows adventure. Had dinner in….shopping €40
Walked 18kms or 26,000 steps and 25 floors : Spent €70 Cash
