I set my alarm for 8am as that was the time Janine's flight from Melbourne was landing. Showered then headed off to walk to the Termini to meet her - it was hot already at 9am! As I had down the same trip into the city from the airport that Janine was going to do today, I was able tim give her a few tips but also to organize a meeting place, in case we couldn't get in touch. I arrived at about 9:25 and sat near Lush as arranged. I was keeping an eye on the arrival times of the trains from Fiumicino and would then watch for passengers coming off the train. The 9:40 came and went - no Janine. The 9:55 came and went - still no Janine so I decided to get a coffee and a sandwich from the Lavazza stall next to Lush. While I was waiting for my coffee I got a tap on the shoulder - Janine!!
She had actually arrived at 9:25 but had gone out a different exit (I didn't know there was one!). She had been sending messages but they hadn't sent so I had no idea of her movements.
When she couldn't find Lush or me, she went into Vodafone and bought a SIM card but she finally found me before she needed to use it. It was so lovely to finally find her! We then ventured onto the Metro and it was on 2 stops to Colosseo. Janine got the amazing view of the Colosseum as we exited the underground station and we then walked to our apartment. After spending some time for her to organise herself and freshen up, we decided to head out and explore.
We walked back around the Colosseum, past the Roman Forum and then took in the huge Victor Emmanuel building. From here we walked to the Trevi Fountain - it was scorching hot today and it was more crowded than yesterday! We mananged to maneuver our way through the crowd to secure a spot on the edge of the fountain so I could get some shots of Janine. She threw a coin over her shoulder and we decided it was time for a gelato!
From here we walked to the Spanish Steps and it too was so crowded. After looking around for a while we decided to head back. After
walking about 10 minutes or so Janine could feel her energy dissipating so we headed to the nearest Metro stop. Good idea as a) it was way cooler and b) only 2 stops to Termini then 2 stops to Colosseo.
By the time we got back to our apartment Janine was knackered. Ths was about 4pm and she went straight to bed while I just chilled out and worked on my blog. Janine woke around 6pm and we had a little happy hour on our balcony as she was adjusting to being awake when her body wanted to sleep for another 6 hours at least!
Around 8pm we ventured out for dinner. We found a nice little restaurant around the corner so decided that would be good. She chose a rabbit dish and I had the scotch fillet. Both dishes were delicious and we accompanied then with a glass of red wine each. After dinner we went for a stroll around the Colosseum which is even more stunning at night! We were heading to the supermarket near our apartment to pick up some supplies for a train trip to Florence tomorrow when we decided to have an Aperol
Spritz at a bar we were walking past. We did - and it was delicious! After that we stopped at the supermarket and picked up some cheese, prosciutto and olives for lunch tomorrow. By now it was 11:30 and we decided that was a pretty good effort for Janine's first day after a very long flight!
