Beautiful architecture, lots of pigeons, the office of tourist information is hidden here (i.e. we walked around for 30 minutes trying to find it) Day 2- First stop - Piazza Maggiore, the most famous place in Bologna. A beautiful, artichectural study in the middle of a large piazza. Although the Basilica de San Petronio is unfinished, the shear massive size of the building is quite impressive. We missed the walking tour in English (1 time only during the day) so if you are in need, plan accordingly (we had Jose the historian who took up the slack). We explored the small market streets to the east of the Piazza Maggiore and found a wonderful café to have lunch (Bar Calice on Via Clavature). It was great sitting on this tiny medieval street watching the world go by, we tried the local lambrusco (quite refreshing) and ordered the antipasto. Suffice to say, we don’t remember the name of all the cured meats but they were wonderful. The highlight was the tortellini con panna and prosciutto - obscuring all previous pasta experiences in the US. We made our way to the the 2 towers (due torri) following lunch and for a mere 3 euro each we walked off our lunch on a 97 meter hike to the top—this is not for those with a fear of
a tiny market
wish we had a kitchen here......... height or claustrophobic or have an underlying cardiac disorder. The views are certainly worth it (at least Jose thought so, Chris is still trying to catch her breath and recover feeling in her legs). The evening was spent on the Piazza Maggiore, taking pictures of the piazza and Fontana de Netuno—a great experience to feel the pulse of the city and we recommend a quick gelato at one of the café’s on the piazza (pigeons will come along for free).
