San Lazzaro
Looking towards Amalfi
The sun is shining, the sea is Mediterranean blue, we have a lovely little apartment in this hilltop town. Life is bliss. Why would you want to drive anywhere today. So we are staying at home and enjoying the local surroundings.
A short walk takes us to the edge of a cliff face overlooking the rocky Amalfi coast line. The white wake from boats stands out from the blue of the sea. In the distance a cruise ship is anchored off the town of Amalfi. We make friends with two women sitting in the shade of an olive tree. One speaks English quite well, the other much older woman nods and smiles. Our new friends tell us about the town especially the local restaurant where her son works.
We say our farewells and climb a little further up the hill for more views. A loud speaker announces the arrival of a truck carrying oranges for sale. We flag him down, choose six, weigh and pay, and get an extra for good measure. This is the way it is done.
This town doesn’t have the supermarkets we are familiar with. It seems the locals have a small shop in

Looking towards Positano what might be a garage under the house. From one shop we are able to buy enough supplies for the next few days. We’ll be able to eat in.
After lunch and a little rest we take a leisurely stroll up the hill from the apartment. Lizards are scurrying from rock crevice to rock crevice. We admire the vegetable gardens that are very productive on the terraces that climb the hill. No space is wasted. Some properties have hens or horses. Climbing on we are encouraged by two women much older than us to keep climbing. We wonder how Baldwin Street in Dunedin, NZ, got the title of steepest street in the world. Those who measure the steepness of streets haven’t been to this street. With plenty of encouragement we keep on going only for the road surface to be replaced by steps. This was the famous Path to the Gods. Early this morning hikers, with all the gear, walked past the apartment. This path takes you on a three hour walk to Amalfi. We have better things to do.
Back down the hill it is time for the gelato. We can have the cold beer later. Our

plan for tomorrow is to take the bus into Naples. The timetable says it takes two hours. It could be quite an experience. First we need the bus tickets. Tabacchi sell the tickets, usually. Not this time, try the bar. No, not this time. Try the machine outside the newsagent. So with enough change to fill a bank we were able to purchase two tickets for 4.50 euros each.
After so much eating out it was time for a light meal with nibbles, bread, cheese, tomatoes, and cold beer. We felt we had earned it today. Tonight it is early to bed because tomorrow will be an early start. We want to be healthy and wise as we venture into the bustling metropolis that is Naples with all its charm and reputation.
Sleep came quickly.
