Saturday turned out to be another clear, sunny day! Lili and I made the most of the fine weather and went walking further along the Sheep’s Head peninsula (
www.sheepsheadroutes.ie). We did two loops and about 5 miles in total, plus a good deal of going up and down steep hills. The first walk was at the very end of the peninsula, where we clambered around to reach the Sheep’s Head lighthouse. The views from there were incredible and we spotted a shoal of dolphins (or seals, we couldn’t tell) about 100m off the coast, moving towards us, their heads bobbing up out of the water every so often. Gannets were tracking the shoal and kept diving into the sea catching fish. From the lighthouse there was about a mile of uphill walking back to the carpark; when we arrived back, we stopped for lunch at the Sheep’s Head café, a nice little place with outside seating on the cliff. We drove to our next walk, known to Annabel as the miner’s walk, because it takes you past old mines and crumbling miners’ dwellings. From the cliff we spotted two fishermen in a tiny powerboat, disappearing into the caves under us, reappearing
again to start fishing. Another spectacular walk! We returned to Heron Gallery just in time for dinner.
I decided to defer the move to my next WWOOFing place until Wednesday, as by Friday I hadn’t finished all of Annabel’s work and she wouldn’t have much time to do it herself, what with all the preparation needed for the start of the art show season in November. So Sunday wasn’t very eventful, as I didn’t need to travel after all. Instead, I just made a couple of clay models in Annabel’s studio and helped Klaus a bit with the hedge trimming. Monday was a miserable day but I spent the morning in the garden, in full waterproofs, clearing the last two flower beds and got covered in mud from head to foot! I gave up at lunch time when the drizzle turned to rain, moving on to doing a bit of framing with Lili instead. Tuesday was drier and I managed to finish the last of the weeding! In the evening, to celebrate my last day, Annabel and Klaus treated me to a meal at Tractors, from which we went to the Art House evening at the cinema to see
the French film Delicacy, which I enjoyed very much! I was touched when they told me I’ve been a good WWOOFer! I’ve enjoyed my time with them immensely and can’t wait to go back.
So this morning I left for my new WWOOFing place, Sunny Meadow Farm in Powers Cross, near Portumna. Annabel, Klaus and Lili needed to go shopping in Cork so managed to time it to fit with my journey, so I got a lift for the first leg of my journey, which I greatly appreciated! It was a bit close time-wise, we arrived at the bus station with less than 10 minutes to spare before the 11:25 bus and I still needed to buy a ticket, but I made it! To get to from Cork Loughrea, where I’m being picked up from, I have to get three buses; the first is to Limerick, the second to Galway Dairies and the third takes me to Loughrea. I arrive just after 4 and it’s another half an hour to the farm. I’m looking forward to getting there but a bit apprehensive about what it’ll be like – WWOOFers are expected to work for 7-8 hours a day. I’ve
been told I’ll be working with a German, an Italian and some locals!
I’ll keep you posted =).
