OK, today was as close to perfect as a travel day gets for me.
I wasn't overly sure what I would do in the morning. I'd planned to catch the bus at around 1pm to continue the tour, buy since we'd gone the other way I had until 4pm to kill. The hostel guy suggested I walk from Doolin to the Cliffs and meet my bus there instead, which is pretty great considering that had been my plan yesterday had I got to the hostel the time I expected.
The walk from Doolin to the Cliffs is supposed to take 2-2.5hrs so between my lunch stop and ten thousand photo breaks it took a little over 3 hours. (I took... 630 shots today. To be fair, about half of those are the waves crashing in and I speed burst them so 1 shot = 10 consecutive shots... but yes.)
Dare I say, I kind of preferred the area I walked today over the Cliffs themselves. I mean, the walk is along the coast so you still have cliffs but there's a lot more. You start quite low, so you see (and hear!) the waves crash up against the
shore. I spent a good 15min in one spot just listening to the waves. So peaceful.
The other great thing about the walk is that you aren't in tourist city so you actually have a piece of nature to yourself for awhile. Well... yourself and a herd of cows 😉 So yes, cows were plentiful on this walk and I was once again fortunate enough to see a bunch of them run and frolic. I also made friends with some donkeys - they came over to see me but joke was on them because I had no food for them.
A pack of horses scared the bejebus out of me. I was on one of the parts very close to the cliff edge (see, because it's not tourist central they don't have awful giant fences everywhere) and the ground started to shake. I turned to see about 10 horses galloping full tilt towards my area. Once I realized I wasn't about to die and fall into the ocean, I was able to enjoy the beauty of the horses. Towards the end of my walk I saw another group - just so happened to be a black, white and
brown in that order which always makes me grin (back to my childhood toys)
Can I just say go me and thank you Irish weather gods that I got two days in a row of wonderful sunshine for cliff viewing?
Back at the Cliffs, I waited for my tour bus to show. I wanted to catch them on arrival to make sure it was going the right way (otherwise I could have just taken a local bus). Thankfully it was going the right way and it was the same driver as yesterday so he knew I could get on. I had to wait while the tour did the Cliffs, so I just read my book.
The rest of the tour was good. We stopped to see the the High Crosses in Kilfenora, the Poulnabrone dolmen (which are older than Stonehenge, apparently), and a ring fort before heading back in to Galway. I like this tour company - really good mix of interesting information and frequent stops to see things of note. I'm glad I'm doing their other tour as well tomorrow.
And I had a magnificent supper again today - pizza at the Dough Boys which
has become a total not to miss on the food scene in Galway. 20min wait to order and it was worth it. I got the "Proper Ham and Mushroom" pizza with truffle oil... to die for. I had planned to save some for lunch tomorrow... but... it's all gone haha. There's this big arts festival going on in town so I have a free concert if I leave the hostel window open - it's a good night.
