Beach
it doesnt look very pretty because it was cloudy but it was really pretty in person! Our first few days we spent walking around the city of Volos, it is much smaller then Athens, so I felt much more at ease almost immediately! We saw some of the older parts of town and the old Cretion church that now had a Greek Orthodox church built on top of it. We saw the water front and some of the beaches. However the beaches that are over here closest to the city are more rocky beachs then sandy beachs. But dont you worry I can get on a bus and ride for 10 minutes and be on a beautiful secluded SANDY beach! This country is wonderful!
On our third day here we went to the top of Mt. Pelion. This was by far my most favorite thing that we have done yet! We rode a bus up the mountain and took about 30 mintues and Panos told us it was time to get of the bus. I of course had fallen asleep because if you stick me in a car for longer then five minutes then i am aready sleeping. So Christophe (one of the other students here) woke me up. When we got off the bus and
coo view
This was a cool view in between two buildings, that is the waterfront that you are looking at looked around it was like we were in the clouds. There were clouds all around us, it was crazy. And I was almost disappointed because we couldnt see anything. So we walked for about five minutes and came to this little village. Everything was made of cobble stone and it was SO cute! We ended up in the middle of an out door cafe and when we looked over the balcony, we could see volos below us, and the water front and everything else we had seen in the past two days. It was the most beautiful view I had ever seen in my life. I wanted to freeze time at that very moment and never leave! We walked around the town a bit more and it was a little bit of a rainy day so we stopped at this Monistary and Panos told us to sketch for a little bit. So we did, and it was probably one of the most peaceful places. We could hear church bells ringing and birds singing and I kept thinking to myself - it's this wonderful on a rainy day, I can't imagine what this is like when the sun is shining!
We got to walk around for a few more minutes on our own and I found this cute little coffee shop to step into since it was raining a bit. I sat down and ordered a frappe and enjoyed the warmth, and the view! Soon it was time to go back to the bus stop and wait for the bus to pick us up. We went back and waited forever, and of course it started raining even harder then before! Finally the bus came and we were on our way back down the mountain. I had seriouslly felt like I had just taken a walk in the clouds, and going back down the mountain was just as pretty as going up. (mom, i guess now would be an okay time to tell you that this is where I am taking you when you get here! It is the most perfect place on earth!) Once we got back to the school Panos explained to us that where we had just been was a place that was undiscovered by many europeans and no Americans and i thought, "yeah until now, if i could move any place on earth and stay forever, that
Sailboats
These sailboats are soo pretty! I cant wait until it is warm enough to go sailing! is where I would go" I wouldnt even care if i didnt have the internet, that place gave me a feeling i had never had in my life!
Thursday we took taxis to some of the archeological sites in the area. It was cool because as we were driving along we drove past was looked like a door into a mountain, and i thought oh that must be someones house. But once we got the archeological sites we started walking toward that door and I thought, what on earth are we doing, we can just barge in on this person!! Come to find out, its not a home, it is an old tomb of a king from 6000 years ago, HOW COOL IS THAT! We walked around in a mycean city that was in ruins and that was pretty cool too! what was weird was that the city that we were in was more inland from the water and Panos explained that at one point the water front was right at the front of this city, but it has moved out, creating Volos. And then suddenly we realized there are little tiny sea shells all over the ground! It
Water front
These are the buildings that line the waterfront and on the ground level of all of them are little cafes that are always open, its so cute! was so weird to think that had i had been standing in that very spot 6000 years ago, i would have been underwater, or at least on the beach!
After we visited all those places we were given a longer journaling assignment then we had been given and we were told we had the weekend to work on it. Well, I took this opportunity to go home and take a nap! I did come back to the building later and get on skype and talk to Levi.
I slept in on Friday and went for a run on the waterfront, but it was SO cold that it wasnt much fun! Then stacy and I went to the grocery store and picked out some stuff to make for dinner. We cooked dinner and then had everyone over to hang out at our place. (yes uncle tim, this would be where more drinking came in! I am in college remember?) Everyone that came over seemed to have a lot of fun and then finally we had to send them all home because we were tired!
We slept in again on saturday and this time, I wasn't even thinking about
running! It was raining so it would have been misurable again! So i read for a little bit and then got ready and made dinner. It was nice to finally have a lazy day, I hadn't had one in awhile! Stacy and I were determined to go out and see how the night life was here on saturday so we got ready for the evening and went to a couple bars! We ended up having a total blast and were so glad we went out and can't wait for another night where we can go out!
Sunday I ended up spending most of the day doing homework, which was okay with me because it was writing in my journal. I talk to my parents on skype and grandma and baba so that was fun! And then I talked to Levi later that night.
Well, today is monday and it was out first day of class. And honestly, it was actually pretty bearable! Our first class was Greek 102 and our teachers name is Gannis. He explained to us that he is not going to take the time to explain grammer and everything he is actually going to teach
ship
this was a HUGE ship that was moving right along the ocean. it doesnt look that big in this picture but it was insanely huge! and it was loud! us what will actually help us, which I think is great! Our next class was called The Greek Legacy: Culture and Place. It sounds pretty awful right? But its not too bad, its more of a history class then anything and today we talked about mythology and how a lot of the myths are things that greeks still believe in today. And now I am done! Its a pretty hard life over here, beautiful mountains, beautiful beaches, school for half a day monday through thursday, I am just not sure how I am going to manage! haha! Well, I will add more when something exciting happens, maybe next monday because we might be going snowboarding this weekend! yay!! I hope I don't break something!
