Got my rental car and naturally first place I went to was a winery…? Lol. Ok but first my car rental guy (Dmitri from Avance) was the sweetest funniest guy ever lol. He was so jokey and then was like are you in lovvvvvvvvvve? I’m like no lol. Then he started gushing about my energy and my smile and why am I not in love?! And all that. Made me laugh, good start to my day at least lol.
From there I headed to the famous Santo Wines! I absolutely forgot there was also a tour in what I booked lol - so I did get to learn quite a bit as well as enjoy the drinks! They were saying Santorini is one of the only places that hasmt been hit by these bugs that eat the grapes/vines, so there are vines that are hundreds of years old. (In a low circular shape to protect the grapes from the sun and wind). It’s also a coop winery - so the local farmers grow and then sell to the winery. The tour was cool - it’s a gravity based winery built over four floors - something about how using gravity preserves
the highest quality vs using machinery for pumps?
The wine tasting was FAB. The food pairings weren’t as exciting as Ftelos Brewery lol (cheese, cured meat and pretzel sticks w a tomato dip and a pesto) but the wine was very good. I preferred their white Nykteti over the Assyrtiko (which is their most popular). I normally am not too fussed by red wines, but I did enjoy their Kameni. And I normally HATE dessert wines, but their Vinsanto was amazing. I have zero ability to effectively describe wines lol but suffice to say the best dessert wine I’ve ever tried. They ship to US, UK and Europe but not Canada… sigh. I’m not lugging around another big bottle (I got a large Skinos at a great price just outside of Thira) so no wine to follow me home.
(Side note: I will forever find it hilarious that when people are asked where they’re from 90% of non-American say the country, while 90% of Americans will say their city or state instead of USA lol)
I kinda just puttered around the middle of the island after that. Much like the rest of my Greek adventures, parking has
been an absolute total bitch and I just can’t be bothered to stress over it at this point. I’ve adopted the attitude that if I get somewhere and no parking? No thank you, byyyyye!
I ended up in Kamari and went exploring along the beach, got a coffee and just people watched. Uh, I thought it was a black sand beach… but it’s basically big grey rocks lol so you def need water shoes or at least some sort of something to not burn your feet.
Tonight… I did it… sorta. I wasn’t quite willing to brave Oia (parking nor people crowds) so I decided to try Imerovigli and just find a spot along where I walked yesterday. Good enough. I parked just before entering town (score) and wandered down towards one of the churches where I remembered there was a nook of sorts near a bunch of the hotel entrances. (I went at 6:30 to do all this haha, I’m so serious about my hatred of parking at this point.)
So I’m currently writing this, sipping a Mythos, just waiting for the sun to go down.
