Alright let’s do this! Off to Santorini today!
Early start with an 8am ferry departure. (Was supposed to be 8:45am but bumped it, ugh) One good thing? The 15min walk to the port was quite nice at 6:45 without the blaring sun lol.
(Not so happy side note, the morning is always weird travel wise - so many half dead maimed pigeons on the roads and other days when I was driving around always so many giant rocks on the road and/or dead animals - I mean that’s like anywhere w roadkill, but still, sad and ew.)
ANYWAY. This ferry was… different? I took Seajets. It’s nice that they have giant racks in the car deck to store your big luggage. Onboard was nice but we had assigned seats (airplane style seats w absolutely no obvious numbering system lol) which was rather odd. And it seemed like a lot of people travelling together were split up too. It was certainly a great people watching experience as everyone boarded LOL. I was just happy to have an aisle seat and not be in the middle somewhere.
Arriving in Santorini is WILD chaos lol. But I managed to (sorta
confirm?) the bus to Thira stops in Karterados on the way into town if you ask, so that was a bonus to not have to do a change which I expected (all the busses start/end in Thira. He told me “no stop only one stop Thira” but then had me put my bag on the other side so I mean I was hopeful lol and he came through. Another couple on the bus tried to get off and he wouldn’t let them bc of bags on the other side etc. Pays to ask I suppose.
Anyway, it was a 8min walk or so to my hotel… I was way too early so just dropped my bags and off I went into the blazing midday sun - big oof. Idk how I managed today tbh - I’ve been so good at staying in the shade (or not outside) from 12-3pm… but no, no not today - today that’s when I traipsed all through Oia lol. As much as one can traipse in 37C weather. (Ie I basically walked flat and where there were glimmers of possible shade…)
Oia is pretty. Lots of nooks and crannies and certainly a kajillion
expensive hotels. I guess they have some sort of porter system bc you could see people (staff) using dollies (ish). I had no real plan of attack just bc it was so hot (and I hadn’t really planned on coming today lol), so idk, I’ll likely come back to hunt for better photos. Everyone keeps telling me to come for the sunset too but idk if I have the heart to deal w all those bodies lol. We’ll see.
I bussed back to Thira and got a few groceries before heading back to checkin at the hotel. I then walked 20min (ugh sun) to Ftelos Brewery but holy shit it was WORTH IT. I did their 6 flights tasting and absolutely worth the 25 euros. Very thorough explanations, super friendly and chatty staff (without being annoying at all), tasty beer and the food was AMAZING. Like the pairings were great, but just total chefs kiss for the food.
