When we left Mykonos the girl that dropped us off at the port said....for me, a Greek island holiday is as follows " food, drink.beach, walk around town and drink and fun at night, no touring or exploring....a holiday, just to relax"So this is what we have done in Naxos all of the above......
Since we mainly have been going to the beach. ...there is not much to report...but I'll try anyway....
Naxos is a little town by the sea...you think, yes it's another island with white houses. When you start exploring this little town, you really see that it's a town that is white and full of colour and that it has kept it's traditional ways....it feels almost like village life...There are tourists, all mainly from Greece, and there is also a lot of locals...Naxos is not known for their tourism as Mykonos or Santorini, that's second to their farming....All local produce and meats are from here, Naxos....I think that is why the food tastes better.I went to explore....( Carmen wasn't well due to the head cold ) the city, the streets are like a labyrinth, there is a castle in the middle of town. I thought I
was back in Venice ...better not get lost......I went exploring and practiced my photography ....lets hope the photos do the town justice...
We have mainly ventured to the beaches, you have st. George beach, st Ana beach, Plaka beach, Petrino beach....all beautiful in their own right...St George's beach is where we spent most of our time has sand, no rocks, on the beach or in the water..the water is beautiful and warm....actually the beach remind us a lot of the Australian beaches...our beds and umbrella cost us 10 euros all up.....and it came with table service...no need to get up .....if someone could now take us to the water and back ..Plaka beach has beautiful water...green and so so clear but it does have coral that you need to cross.....Petrino beach is pretty much the same ....and yes it does have table service too...Naxos also has great beaches for wind surfing and kite surfing.
After nearly spending all day at the beach, you need food. We had some nice traditional Greek food....I think all restaurants here call themselves " traditional Greek food "..but that's what they sell and serve and thats what their customers want....we tried Elliniko, scirocco,
Maro , they were all trip advisor recommendations, i guess you need to decide how good the food and service are...some things I didn't like and Carmen did, and vice versa......Carmen said that some of the dishes were like her mums but not as good as her mums.. Some of these restaurants are so popular they have waiting lines outside ...and sometimes they don't do reservations. We have tried a few others by the water and they were also good.
I convinced Carmen to try the fish spa tanks..... the little fish that eat the dead skin ....we both tried the feet spa for 15 minutes, Carmen, actually liked it....and stayed for another 15. I did the hands instead...that was an experience....hands are nice and smooth now...
Our nights were spent by .....walking around town like the locals, restauranteurs trying to entice you in to their restaurant. Nearly all restaurants all had big screens with the latest Football ......By the harbour people were walking off their dinner or eating ice cream, kids were riding their bikes or playing soccer or other games, teens all checking each other out, or meeting up with other teens, they hadn't seen from
last summer...some having their summer romances, priests walking around meeting up with the locals.....clubs & bars full of people having beers, cocktails ...and that's just the start to a long night....as this is at around 11pm at night....
Carmen got hand made sandals, specially for her.....she does have a big foot, its hard for her to buy shoes in Europe 😊 they don't make them for giants. Shoes turned out nice.
Every shop or restaurant we go to....Carmen gets asked if she has been there before,or they have seen her before...one even said welcome back....I think her twin is around town somewhere?
It's been a wonderful trip here in Naxos....We have met some really nice people..we hope that it doesn't lose it's charm and traditions....and great food and it's beautiful, clean beaches...
Good bye Naxos now to the final destination......Athens....
