Early morning we arrived into Santorini, Greece from our ferry at 2am without any accomodation. We were planning on climbing up a hill to see Santorini with the sunrise but when we arrived we realised that it was a huge impossible hill especially with our packs. We slept in the waiting area on the benches until the buses started again and we could check into our hostels. Suprisingly we all had amazing sleeps and headed to our hostel. I think i had worked Santorini up in my mind so much so when we drove through to the hostel i was so disappointed as we didn't see anything that looked like the postcards so when we arrived at the hostel we weren't that psyched to be there. But we got on or togs and headed to beach and had awesome arvo at the beach.
The next morning we decided to see the real Santorini and along with our kiwi roommate we met the night before, we jumped on the bus to Thira- the main town. This was what i imagined Santorini to be like, there were all white wash houses and tiny cobble streets. The views of the caldera were amazing, it
really is as beautiful as the pictures show. We headed down 400 stairs to the old port- rejecting the hundreds of donkeys lining the stairs. We all felt so sorry for them it was so hot and these donkeys were standing in groups facing the walls all day waiting for tourists to take them for a ride. It was so sad so we marched up those 400 stairs again! what a work out! After an afternoon here we left to watch the sunset in Oia. This is the town where all the postcards and photos are taken and is a lot less touristy than Thira and its stunning. We explored the town and its small cobbled streets then went to find the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Snacks (olives and peanuts covered in caramel and sesame seeds AMAZING!) and found the perfect rooftop to watch the sunset from. It was so beautiful watching the sunset over the houses and caldera - there were so many people also who had came to watch. So amazing that so many people came to see this natural event that happens every night, and that it just happens whether anyone notices or not. I
was looking over the rooftop and the owner saw me (an old greek lady with a stick) and started yelling at me in greek and waving her flag around.) i quickly sat down but when we went to go she was there waving her stick at us as we were trying to get up from the roof and the kiwi we were with couldn't get up and lena and i were laughing so hard we were to weak 😊 we thought we would have to stay there for the rest of the night but we mustered up the stregnth and darted down the street with the lady chasing and waving her stick at us. I did feel bad- especially the fact she must get it every night in summer! but it was the perfect viewing platform!
The next day we spent the entire day in Oia down at Amooni bay the water was so clear and we took our googles so swam around for hours exploring the reef. But cause the water is so salty we couldn't go down far... i can float in this water- normally an impossible task even when i am trying! Met a group of
Albanian guys and so were pressured into jumping off the point into the water. such a lovely relaxing day and sooo warm! up all the stairs again and back to the hostel. Alice and i went for a moonlight swim but she was so scared of something lurking in the water we didn't last long- was so refreshing then we had Greek gyros kebabs for 2 euro! such a deal and sooo yummy!
We decided to splash out and get a hostel in oia for our last night- i wish we had known about this hostel earlier it would have made our experience here so different. Another amazing relaxing day in the sun and headed back to the hostel to have a drink on the roof and watch the sunset. there were matresses on the roof and we almost slept up there, then our roomates (group of 4 australian girls so lovely and doing the same year away, may catch up for future travels together) told us we could sleep up there for half price!! we were so gutted.. oh well next time!
Time to leave santorini..we had an intensely stressful time getting to the ferry as buses
were late, taxi lines were huge with snotty nosed tourists pushing in and almost missing our ferry but we made it and were so relieved to get on! Morocco will be really nice with everything planned and other people organising buses/ ferries/ flights etc. It has definately been a good learning experience and we didnt have too many screw ups!! we had such a nice time though we were disapointed as we had big expectations but it was a really beautiful place and met some really lovely people. I love how many amazing people you meet travelling and in hostels -one of my favorite things about travelling!
food to remember:
greek salads
gyros
peantus covered in caramel and sesame yum!
